Exceptionally grateful for this demonstration. Is Agfacolor exculsive to Octane? The comparison to Filmic is extraordinary, it really looks cinematic. Is it just me or does Filmic and Agfa produce the best results? I thought AGX would have been the big contender.

Thank for this, man nice work on the scene btw! Would be great to have the rendertimes and settings along with the visual comparaisons as it is often what will make people chose a renderer over another one. Currently working on a project with a lot of volumetrics, and rendertimes on cycles get extremely slow. Is it the case with octane aswell?
@ambocc2 ай бұрын
I haven't done a deep dive into the latest volumetrics for Octane, but generally the last time I checked, Octane was faster. Now, with the new upcoming version, I believe the new AI denoiser should make everything faster.

When I put my Character in blender with animation . When I push play it does it animate. But it stay in one spot. If I move the character when I put it back to 0 it goes back where it was loaded it. How can I fix this?
@thomas-cheng3 ай бұрын
I can only guess you don't have autokey frames on. Or after you move your character, you need to set the key for that position at the new frame. Then it will transition from one position to the next.

Dynamic range is much much higher in Octane. If I were to redo it again, I would set the upper limit between 1 to 10 to reduce the white noise.

I still believe that you need to set the specular value back to 0.5. That is the common value for non-metal materials like rock, wood, and things like that. 0.5 is defined in PBR BSDF which describes the rim reflection effect or Fresnel reflection or F0 in PBR BSDF. And for reflectiveness, you need to tweak roughness instead of metallic. Usually you just need 0 or 1 to tell the renderer whether the material is metal. Sometimes you need value in between just to blend a metal material with a dielectric material.
@ambocc4 ай бұрын
I thought so initially, but after some test, I ultimately concluded Octane was not following the PBR BSDF model exactly. This might change with the upcoming release.

Octane, it seems to me, has a little more contrast, not significantly, but still more. therefore it seems more realistic. I think if you add contrast to the cycles, the image will be absolutely the same, it will not be possible to distinguish.
@Ericaandmac10 күн бұрын
cycles look less contrasty and more dusty so it feel more like real camera for my perspective. Cycles has more variation on surfaces which gives more gradient and irregularity as well. So in this comparison cycles seem better. Just visually talking but probably its not fair to compare like this because light densities and colors seem slightly different that may cause these changes in results, to have proper comparison, someone should tweak all light density and material colors to matfh fully...
@foliumcore6 ай бұрын
They both look very similar as they're all modern day path tracers. The biggest difference is that octane is a spectral renderer and handles colors as a gaussian spectrum instead of RGB and can handle caustics (they have a photon tracing kernel unlike cycles), dispersion, scattering better and more realistically.

This is a really interesting comparison, and I love that you did it with a Fallout scene! Do you have a personal fave? Octane with Agfa looks the best to me personally - the highlights may be a bit more blown out than filmic, but the rolloff has more of that film-like response curve. Only downside to me personally is the fireflies appearing a few times in Octane, but looking again at the last Octane one shared, I'm not seeing that
@ambocc6 ай бұрын
My personal favorite is Octane with Agfa. It gives me the overall look and mood that I want from a fallout project. Generally, Octane does look better overall on a number of internal test that I performed, but is it worth the subscription? For client projects, I think it is. The denoiser from Octane isn't as good yet, but I've sent a request for them to adopt the free Intel denoiser. Hopefully, we get to see that, or they improve their existing denoiser. Regardless, I can correct it with more samples, but it will take slightly longer.
@vladyslavlavrenov91674 ай бұрын
@@ambocc Interestingly enough they integrated the intel denoiser in 2024 version

@@vladyslavlavrenov9167Finally, I requested that last year. I mean why reinvent the wheel when you have a strong free option with constant R&D.
@vladyslavlavrenov91674 ай бұрын
@@ambocc To be honest their existing AI denoiser is really good. Intel denoiser you can use pretty much in compositing since it's available there too, plus I use neat video sometimes too which is the best denoiser for animation, it's good they added Intel in Octane now, but it's not a game changer, it doesn't do much imo. But still good to have I guess although I don't see a huge difference. Good thing they didn't add optix denoiser because it's the worst one, definitely wouldn't use it over Octane's original AI denoiser
@ambocc4 ай бұрын
@@vladyslavlavrenov9167 I use to do that with the denoiser in post, but realized it doesn't work thru glass materials, since the glass pass does not provide the proper information. I submitted this to get them to rewrite the pass data so that it will work with Denoiser. I haven't tested it out yet, but I think I will soon. Thanks for pointing it out.
