Paul, is there a way to use different note lengths for different notes instead of one note length for the entire pattern? That would be my suggestion if it’s not possible. Thanks for the great app and dedication to the iOS community!

Yes, you need to lay a note then on the column immediately to the right set the column as a TIE. To do this long press on the ON button and select TIE from the menu. If you go through all my videos I explain how this works and quick ways to extend notes.

The best way to accomplish this is to switch to an empty pattern using AU params.

@PaultheMusicMan thanks, but that's not what i mean. If i use the plugin in Cubasis and play a chord, only the arpeggio is sent to the synth. That is what I want. But in Logic I always get the arpeggio plus the actual chord, so that means the midi through is active and I don't want that. I hope that makes it more clear

@@zero2herobeatspaul882 MidiStep allows MIDI input to control patterns start/stop/transpose etc. in Note On mode, and the control data is never sent to the MIDI Out, but it is sent to MidiSteps MIDI Thru port. So perhaps Logic is combining the output of both ports? I could possibly make this a Setting in the next version so it can be turned off, although this seems more like a bug in Logic to be honest.

@@zero2herobeatspaul882 So just to be clear, and MIDI input is only redirected to MidiSteps MIDI Thru port, and the sequencer output goes to the MidiStep MIDI Out port. So possibly Logic is combining both outputs and sending them to your synth? I could fix this by adding a Setting to allow turning MIDI Thru OFF. Please let me know if I haven't interpreted your issue correctly?

Check the Settngs for an option called Audio Monitor, when enabled it allows sound to pass through Neon.

Great tutorial and great app, just wondering regarding MIDI, when controlling external instruments in standalone mode (no AUM), how can we chose the target MIDI channel ? Actually even with AUM using the MIDI Channel filter, it always sends to channel 1.

Glad you like the app! Take a look at the Settings menu, there is an option there to set an output MIDI channel.

@ I did look both in the top left menu and the button representing a MIDI DIN port on the bottom. You can set many things like CC mode, aftertouch, you can choose the MIDI port but there is no place to choose the channel. I do see in the manual that the MIDI channel selection should be in that menu on the top left /Settings submenu,but the item doesn’t appear for me. I have another item on the bottom of it called “Drum Mapping” instead (which isn’t in the manual) That’s why I also tried through AUM with the channel filter but it looks like as it says it is a filter and not a router so it just filters MIDIStep when I open only other channels.

So i was trying to create a a good pitch shifter with Formant adjustment going from high to low for vocals in nurack ios but the only Formant module i can find is the formant filter but finding it kinda difficult playing with to get that good pitch shift Formant shift plugin effect for vocals that many plugins have thats clean for vocals. Any help would be appreciated or a preset or new module or something for this particular thing. Loving the nurack ios app and just stumbled onto during recent black Friday listings. Ty and stay blessed. Also is there anywhere people share presets to download or anything like that?

There is no such formant module in NuRack sadly, and I only recently released a pitch shifter with formant preservation (MeloVox) but it won't allow a bend from one note to another. You can export and share presets on NuRack by using the File Transfer option on the main menu in NuRack. You need to connect your iPad up to your PC/MAC with a cable to transfer using your web browser.

The PLAY button is at the top of the interface next to the Song and Rew butons. Once you turn this ON the clock hands start spinning. You need to load this into a DAW like AUM and route its output to an AUv3 instrument to make any sound. This is a MIDI sequencer and not an instrument that makes sound.

Thanks for the great app, I love it! I have a question and I don’t know where to ask it. When using cords with ties, the midi signal stops briefly before the next cord starts. My gate settings are set to 100%, and when I adjust them lower than the gap before the next cord gets even longer. Am I correct that even if the gate is set to 100%, MidiStep still leaves a small gap of silence around 0.0.1 long between the chords? Is there a setting I can adjust to make the midi last the entire bar? I’m happy to send you a video to show you what I mean but I don’t know where to send it. Thanks for your help and the great videos and the great app! ❤

Yes, you are correct it does leave a small gap between the end of one chord and the start of another to avoid any sticking notes with certain apps. There isn't currently any way to change this but I may add an option to control this in a future version. If you were playing chords by hand it would be the same as it always takes a small amount of time to move from one chord to another.

Thank you for replying. At least now I know this is the case. I want to use MidiStep to feed chords into StepPolyArp where I build custom arp patterns, but because of this gap, it always cuts off the last few steps of my arp. I end up using Scaler 2 instead of MidiStep because it doesn’t leave that gap, but to be honest I’d rather keep using MidiStep because I love it. If you could eliminate that gap (or introduce an Arp editor ;>) that would greatly increase my ability to use MidiStep in my music. Thanks for your consideration. Keep up the great work @PaultheMusicMan I love the app!

Great update. If you generate accents lane and want it applied to HH but not to BD and SD, I suppose that’s not possible? I guess it is a UI challenge, setting different velocities for each voice in a chord on a step. Would you suggest using a separate MidiStep instance for the HH?

The accent was written to work with Velocity, Gate and Mod 1-8, in other words the melodic stuff and not so much the Drums. However it does work in a fashion since usually you want beat boundaries emphesised as this is what gives a sense of rhythm. Due to the way MidiStep works it generates a chord where there are multiple drum notes.

I have had success separating the drum voices in one instance from the percussion voices another, as you’ve already figured out. That allows you to use a different accent pattern for hihats, and has the additional benefit of making it possible to use double and half time for the different instances. You can also apply swing independently. Lots of possibilities!

I was able to load MidiStep as an AUv3 on my MacBook Pro M3, but I don't know if this is intended. It works with one exception: the random dice do not function or change steps. Is there a workaround for this, or is MidiStep AUv3 not intended for M3? I am trying to use it in Logic Pro. Thanks for any help!

It was really intended to be used on iOS, but I guess it should also work on the Mac too. You need to watch all the videos to understand how the randomize patterns work. Some lanes are not setup to perform randomization by default so please work through the videos as all is explained.

Seems there's a bug now: Everytime I'm building a user kit and hit the "Assign" button the app crashes. I'm on a 2024 13" iPad Air, latest iOS.

If I had a penny for all the issues Apple introduce into their new OS's I'd be rich!! I will take a look and see if I can replicate. Just a thought, have you run the App in standalone mode since installing it to ensure all the kits are installed correctly? There are lots of issues with iOS 18.1.1, which is why I never upgrade until I'm sure all Apple's bugs are gone!! I just tried on my iPhone with 18.1.1 and the Assign button works fine in standalone mode. I've also tried an iPad with 18.1 and that was fine, just upgrading my OS to try again. Maybe worth trying a reboot to see if that helps.

Hi. I know….4 year old video. I wonder, are you still using this? I own so much, sorry, so many guitar VSTs and HATE most all the strumming elements of the software….picking not much better. Some seem just feeble while others are too complex for my brain. I’m a keyboard player, Every year, li search again….latest, greatest. 4 pockets always comes up. I play guitar-don’t own one presently. I am very good at strumming an actual guitar. I wish there was some hardware STICK that would function as a strummer. Like LE STRUM except NOT sized for Barbie Dolls. I take it you have 4 pockets on an iPad, yes ? Thanks!! I’ll search your related tutorials. Mark

I haven't done a video on Strummer for some time, but that doesn't mean its not being regularly updated. Strum simulation isn't a perfect science, and it is hard to program. These days you can do most of the things we can do in Strummer inside of MidiStep, and for many things it has become my go to program. Yes, I use it on iPad.

if memory serves me correct they are so long as the Automation TAB in Settings is set to 'Advanced Parameters Automation Mode'. If you load the Audio Plugin template for instance you will see that it exposes AU params for Rack A, which is a folder contraining a GATE, SCOPE and REVERB params.

Hi, please, it seem impossible to load an existing AUM session made before MidiMixer, but how to add MidiMixer to it ?

You can use the Load Mix and Save Mix buttons if you want to perminently save a mix. Normally you rely on the host to save the mix as part of its saved session rathere than manually save/restore them.

@@fabsko195 While you could, you would need to manually set up all the mappings which is a pain in the ass and why I provide templates. If you examine one of the default templates you can probably work out the mapping by examining how the velocity and pan are setup etc.

Having lots of fun with this one, so much good stuff packed in there for creating new ideas. I'm having a problem though where I can't get the "Divider" to apply to a tied note, for example to split two tied quarter notes into 3 to make a triplet over a half note duration (if that makes sense!). It could be that I'm doing something wrong here so any help would be appreciated.

The divider won't work on a TIE'd note, thats not you its intentional. However, you can kind of simulate this by setting a CHORD on the note ON (not the tie) and adding 3 notes to the chord with an ARP UP or DOWN. It will get the timing you want although it won't play the same note you will get the rhythm. I may well look into being able to apply dividers to TIE's in a future version, but for now its a restriction.

This is a great app that has the potential to replace arranger keyboard. The only think I am missing here is to play and record the pattern. I am not much fan of creating parrtn by clicking. A fusion of Helium (to record parren by playing live) and Evolver FX would be so nice. Any thoughts?

This is a great app, but quite a complex app to program. It is loosly based on the Korg WaveState and if you've ever seen that app it is rather complicated too. It isn't really possible to play somthing into this app and have it record unfortunately.

Wow! This is a whole new level. I loved Midistep from the start but this turns it into a very powerful tool that will jump start your song/groove creation by combining melodies (motifs), chord progressions and basslines into a whole - the core elements of any song. Pick a scale (happy, moody, exotic, whetever), bring your own chords or let Midistep choose for you and you're off to the races!

One approach is to increase the probability of Note Ties which will sustain notes over step boundaries.

As Greg pointed out you can increate the Note Ties or add ties, I do mention this in the video, and if you want to insert them more randomly turn off the Motif Ties checkbox.

@ Yes but I think that both rests and ties have a role to play here. A rest adds a suspension, “what comes next” so to speak. Think of a blues guitar solo.

Great update! In a previous video, Midistep was used with StrummerFX (I think?) to make some great sounding articulations while playing guitar. Would you consider sharing a video or tutorial on how that was accomplished? (Like around the 14 minute mark in video 2. Maybe it's just a particular preset, but I'm really curious :)

The articulation you’re hearing in MasterClass 2 is a feature of the Acoustic Spanish soundfont in Strummer. Velocities of 112 or higher will cause the slide articulation. You can accomplish similar effects with any instrument by using MidiStep’s Pitch Bend feature.

Paul is there a harmony mode in the works that allows the creation of custom chords or scale. I use this feature in TC Helicon ‘s voicelive 2 and would love to move to my iPad only, using your plugin in loopy pro.

You can choose which harmonies to add, so you can select a 3rd/5th and Oct say, but these will be fixed. You can switch to MIDI Chord mode and have incoming MIDI control the harmonies. Loopy Pro is getting MIDI features in version 2.0 so I'm guessing at that point it will be possible.
