That tripod will be reduced in price very shortly - I have a manforotto that does everything that one does besides weight - and it's way way cheaper. Also I like the weight on mine - it can be used as a weapon for defense in the times we are living in now. The one you are showing is also way to complicated or will be a nuisance over time due to its functionality. In a few months it will be selling for $50 due to its design flaws and maybe sell.

I don't think I have ever seen such a thorough review of a tripod from the practical usability aspect before. Very good. The fidgety/fiddly(photo jargon) mounting of the plate on the camera and then the camera on the tripod disqualifies it for me. The design just seems to bypass the convenience of the standard Arca Swiss plate and receiver system. The combination ball/pan-tilt head seems clever though.
@BoorayPerry3 күн бұрын
Oh, I won't use the plate. I keep a grip on my camera that has an arda-swiss bottom.

i'm an image sensor designer, i design for satellites, earth based observatories, X-ray, machine vision, electron microscopy ... you name it. a bigger pixel doesn't gather more light ... wait for it ... don't get angry ... a bigger "effective aperture" gathers more light, or you may call it the "equivalent F number" which is the f number of your lens times the 1.5 crop factor. if you have the same field of view (aka equivalent focal length), and the same equivalent f number (aka effective aperture in cm), then the total irradiance that falls on the whole chip is the same in both cases. a bigger pixel can have a higher dynamic range, which shows itself in lower ISOs and daylight images in the shadows. don't confuse noise and dynamic range. a good dynamic range is handy if you wanna post-process your image and bring out details that are otherwise not visible. and in low light situation with higher ISO that dynamic range will buried under the noise level and you won't see any difference.
@amirbabfish4 күн бұрын
crop sensor = cheaper, much lighter, 1 stop (factor 2) worse dynamic range, same noise
@amirbabfish4 күн бұрын
bokeh effect, only the effective aperture matters! if that's the same then you get exactly the same bokeh. in other words, if the two cameras have the same viewing angle (equivalent focal length) and the same equivalent f number, then the bokeh will be 'scientifically' the same. not "kinda" the same, exactly the same.
@amirbabfish4 күн бұрын
small sensors are generally easier and faster to read out, because of the slow settling time of the row and column wires in the array which become the limiting factor, that's why a smaller sensor has a better chance at giving you a high fps for image and video. that's why they go to BSI or stacked BSI, those wires eat up your QE. if light hits those wires that light is lost. but when you go to BSI the wires are at the back of the chip, so they can have more wires and more parallelism to read out the image faster. thus, BSI means a bit more light sensitivity (say, 1.5X), and faster readout.

I shoot raw 100% of the time, so this doesn't matter to me. Even so, I must say digital zoom (as you said) is merely cropping an image, there's no zooming going on, only fakery in that regard. A whole lot of people don't understand the difference between digital vs optical zoom and they unknowingly are scrapping the outer edges of their pictures. So this new digital crop "feature" on the VI gets a thumbs down from me.
@BoorayPerry7 күн бұрын
What does shooting raw have to do with it? The teleconverter is optical and affects RAW and JPG. Yes, "digital zoom" is just cropping but if you are going to have to crop it anyway then why not do it in camera and save the hassle? I did a video years ago where I compared the in-camera crop to a photoshop crop and the in-camera was as good or better.

Otherwise, in general, about converters. Some people say they are unnecessary and that the X100 series is all about that single 35mm focal length. But I think the converters give you a huge opportunity to have the whole kit very small and relatively light - it fits in one small shoulder bag. But the photographer gets a range of about 26-105mm in one device at a relatively very good aperture without having to change glass in the field and risk dusting the chip. The camera is completely weather sealed. The alternative would mean some very bright and expensive zoom lens, or several separate glasses, the changing of which already increases the risk of dusting the chip in the field. It would also mean more weight than the X100 with two converters.

Thanks for another review. For $250, Freewell offers something that Fuji offers for $700, if I'm not mistaken. Plus a macro lens. Fuji has its advantages, but at this price it's unbeatable. I just noticed that for some photos from the teleconverter, the exif data shows 19mm, so the camera menu has been switched to wide angle converter. It might be worth using the same little hack for these lenses that is used on the first generation of Fuji converters - i.e. sticking a little magnet on the inside, so that the camera itself detects the type of converter and adjusts the settings, line alignment, etc.
@BoorayPerry8 күн бұрын
That's strange, I had the camera set to teleconverter... Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake somewhere. I haven't looked at the hack yet because I'm convinced I would screw it up. :)
@premyslvavrousek8 күн бұрын
@@BoorayPerryI don't think there should be a problem with the hack if there's space on the freewell lenses for that tiny magnet - but I think there is. It's just a matter of polarity - one side of the magnet shows wide, the other side tele. Just try driving the magnet near the X100 lens and see for yourself how it reacts and how the camera adjusts the settings. I think it's worth a try because you often forget to switch some settings and when it's automatic, it's better.
