Biggest lesson my math teachers ever thaught me: Cretainty: -Correct initial data + correct reasoning = correct result data -Incorrect initial data + correct reasoning = incorrect result data Uncertainty: -Correct initial data + incorrect reasoning = incorrect result data OR correct result data -Incorrect initial data + incorrect reasoning = incorrect result data OR correct result data -Incorrect initial data + incorrect reasoning = incorrect result data OR correct result data *The reasoning is the most important part of any math problem* Sometimes incorrect/illogical reasoning will lead you to correct results. But it doesn't matter that the result is correct, because if you learn to think illogically then it's only a matter of time until those methods take you from correct initial data to incorrect initial data. If a teacher gives you points for arriving at a correct ressult with an invalid reasoning, *they're teaching you to use invalid reasonings that won't guarantee you correct results as soon as you change the initial value* Teachers' goal is to make sure students learn which reasoning to use given a situation, so that they can with *100% certainty* arrive at a correct result given *any* correct initial value/data/information in the future This is why often times they give you a failing grade even though you got the correct result. It's not because they're jealous, stuborn or bitter. You're not being tested on your ability to get correct results. You're being tested on your ability to apply correct reasoning, so that in the future you'll arrive at correct results with 100% certainty no matter the initial data Sometimes you can use another valid method to arrive at a correct result, that's true. But consider the following: sometimes your teacher knows, but they still need you to learn the specific method they're asking you to use. Math is huge. They're not being stuborn and bitter because you don't use their method. They need to make sure you learn that one because it will probably be needed as the foundation for something more complex in the future Sometimes, you might misread an initial value and apply a correct reasoning, arriving at a correct value given your initial information. That result will be correct based on the value you started with and your valid reasoning, but it may differ from the expected answer. The teacher has (or should have, depending on your system) an obligation to mark it as correct because you applied the correct reasoning, and that's what you needed to learn (this is another reason why showing your work is important) I feel like what's portrayed in the video, and also the comments is, at its core, an issue of comunication between teachers, institutions and students, as well as a failure on the school systems' part for not properly explaining to students what the goals of teachers, asignments, tests and education in general are. We're walking into tests with the wrong mindset and it's not necesarily our fault
