I recall when I was younger hearing about a lot of what Duffus was talking about on TV, maybe they interviewed him, but out of all the Blackbeard stories, his just made the most sense.

I think galleons were used and built to a later date than 1650. The 1680s-1700s seems the cut off point for tall narrowing poop decks. I would define it as 250-300 tons minimum, two gun decks minimum (at least one exposed), but not optimized for more than 30-50 guns (or it becomes a pure warship), 3-4 masts (two with only square sails), plus a forecastle. The broad beam for cargo, tall tapering poop deck, and under 50 cannons for the cargo role (unless really huge?) are pretty unique to that style of ship.

After the Tuscarora War, the Tuscarora relocated to Pennsylvania and interestingly planted apple trees while they were living here. If anyone from Pennsylvania was curious why a nation from the Carolinas had their name mentioned so much in PA. They later moved in New York. I definitely find Kevin Duffus's evidence and argument compelling. It makes much more sense than the General History of Piracy. I'm not saying I am 100% there, but his theory has definitely gained traction. He mentions a well, interestingly I've visited a water source at the entrance to the Delaware Bay that was once feshwater before the locals dug a trench from the bay to pollute it due to pirates and sailors landing for water and stealing from local farms.

Fascinating to hear about the political, economic, and cultural forces that are driving the hostile arguments about the true identity of Black Beard. I, too, have been doing historical research (1690s London) and have found errors, omissions, and mis-interpretations in conventional history accounts. "Archeologist assembling a jar from a few random shards" is exactly what it is like.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge sank off the coast of North Carolina, not in the Caribbean. The Beaufort Maritime Museum ran a lot of the archeological work and has pieces from the wreck (and free admission - highly worth a visit for those who find themselves nearby).

@thecreweofthefancyКүн бұрын
Haha, so #1 get a heavier beer. I was in New England at the time so I used Sam Adams which is on the heavier side for normal US. Pick a good colonial recipe for normal pancakes and replace the milk with beer. The one I used called for nutmeg and allspice. For an English light unit, they were definitely filling for the day's shenanigans.

I think the show struct a very smart balance between real history, and modern aesthetics. Made the show very easy to approach, and incredibly engrossing. I don't know anything about IRL sailing (at least not on vessels that large, I've only been on small sailboats) so I didn't notice many issues with the boats, other than yea, no sloops. But the costumes, ugh. I mean, on one hand, I appreciate the costumes, all 100% handmade, and I think all the characters look 'good', and usually pretty cool, but very fantastic, unbelievable, and not historical at all really. I'd still like to have Flint's coat though.

My take on this is that, absent "morality", sex is just seen as a biological need and function. Yeah, it can be fun too, but mostly when you need to release that sexual tension, they went with whatever was available that also turned them on to get them off. Maybe they preferred other men, or maybe they didn't care who (or what) they docked their dinghy in. Any port in a storm.
