Back in August I published a video analyzing the history behind Jack Sparrow, and challenged you guys to make historically accurate versions of the character. Since then I've gotten a few submissions sent to me, so let's take a look and see what has been made, and the interesting inspirations that went into these designs. I will make some commentary on inaccuracies, it's not really to critique the artists as much as to get an opportunity to discuss history, and possibly clear out some common misconceptions.

If that changes anything, the first pistol is tucked to the sling via a belt hook, I drew the pistol with the lock to the outside which I suppose is the source of confusion, the second pistol is meant to be tucked behind his belt. Also, totally forgot about this lol.

Not gonna lie, its so amazing to see all those artworks. People pouring their hard work into art and it shows! I'm happy noone sent any Ai-generated illustrations. Nowadays people far too often mistake typing a few words in a prompt with making art.

I think this would be pretty fun to do with Barbossa, regardless.

I didn't realize sailors of the period would ware their tricorn hats with the flat side forward. Wonder if there was a practical reason they would do this? I'm also surprised they wouldn't ware their hats with the brim flat so as to provide protection from the tropical sun, much like you see many people do on their own sailboats in those conditions. Love the videos! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on this subject!

That holster....on just a basic look at it, the shape does seem to match up with some of the saddle holsters and the holsters in the engravings.... What concerns me the most is that I don't think the artifact survived "conservation" hence why I don't think any further information exists.

the picture of it is garbage so it's hard to discern if the top of it is part of the actual holster or simply its shadow, if it is part of the holster it looks almost identical to other contemporary holsters but if its a shadow it could simply be some wrap or bag, especially considering how thin it seems to be, it seems to sit very tightly around the barrel but this could be from decay, either way I will discuss this more in the pistol video

I was under the impression that the pirates ride was inspired by treasure island, as other rides were inspired by American literature there. Depp was inspired by Keith Richard’s, but I believe the writers were thinking of Calico Jack and Silver. A fashionable witty pirate

I think Hector Barbossa look is supposed to be old-fashioned, like the last of the original buccaneers, and we don't know how old he really is with him being for a time undead and all.

I don’t know about pirates specifically, but belts were worn at the navel throughout history, especially when used for carrying weapons. You can see it persist today in highland wear wich is loosely based on 1740s fashion.
