Ahhh my filter wasn’t working and I had no clue. However my fish started breading. They loved it. I did do part water changes every 2 weeks but the all were healthy and just fine

Great information. Even the Murkiest natural pond has way more surface area to volume. Not to mention rain and possibly springs. It's pretty hard to replicate that in an aquarium.

The more natural you make your Aquarium, the longer you can go between changes but as you say its hard to replicate nature entirely.

I like this video, it addressed some questions I had such as the hard water and build up if I just top up from evaporation. I have many plants and fish. I notice a balance: if I water change/ gravel vacuum too much my plants suffer, but I don’t like the look of the build up of brown waste stuff. So when I see this build up I gravel vacuum around the front and side edges where it's visible when it gets too much. It seems to work fine for me. I then take that dirty water and water .y house plants with it and they love it.

This is a useful and thoughtful video. Thanks for that. I don't disagree with anything you said, but personally, I'd still encourage aquarists to have algae eating fish, specifically, a bristlenose pleco or two (or more if they like them). They are "messy" (poop a lot), but they keep algae off the glass. I have not needed to clean the glass in two years because we have them in all of our 13 tanks. If we leave them out of a tank, the glass gets algae on it and we add bristlenose to deal with it. They are fun fish (and fun to breed), and I'm willing to do more water changes to clean up after them rather than scrape the glass. Snails are not as good at cleaning the glass, though I also find them useful for cleaning up excess food. But they can actually outcompete slow feeding fishes for food. As you imply, balancing input of nutrients and light with algae removal (snails and fish) is the solution. In nature, there is always algae where there is light. How much you want is about aesthetics, not aquarium health.

Still satisfied after 1 month? I'm considering on buying the Filtosmart 100 thermo for my 96L tank. I'm reading very mixed opinions on this one. Also, why didn't you put a prefilter on the inlet? Those gaps don't really look shrimplet proof or am I wrong? Thanks for the upload!

Thanks for the comment. I am very happy with it so far I haven't encountered any of the issues others have. With regards to to the prefilter, the gaps are quite small so although unlikely shrimplets could get in. Its not had a clean yet so I might find some in there but if anything I have seen a population boom in my shrimp.

It is important not to have the mindset that the algae eating fish will do your maintenance for you. Conversely, if you really want a Clown Pleco, Flying Fox, a Hillstream Loach or SAE, (This the correct reason for getting any fish), the tank absolutely _has_ to be seasoned and have at least some algae for these fish to thrive.

This is such a much needed video. You do such a thorough yet fundamental job sharing knowledge. Thank you. Normalizing algae can combat the one most crazy behavior of newbies -- disinfecting their entire tank! I've heard of people washing their gravel and filter and entire tank with soap or bleach, or simply cleaning it so well that everything dies and they just buy more fish and plants to kill!

I have a particular story with algae eating fish: at the beginning of my current aquarium adventure I didn't like Bristle nose Plecos at all, i didn't want them in my tank, but then after months, I spoke with the owner of a lfs i bought one (not two because i didn't like the idea of breeding them), then this lonely fish matured and i realized i had a female, at that momenti I wanted to add a male, basically at first i didn't like them now i want to breed them and i currently have a batch of little plecos in my aquarium 😍
