This 'Echo 2-strok- engine has three intake ports on the cylinder and each port has a designated reed, any one of which if slightly loosing pressure will result in bad performance not easily identified.... Testing all 3 reeds only takes a minute when the carb is off: Use a short piece of 1/2 'hose and draw negative pressure with your mouth through each one of the 1/2" ports, it literally takes a minute to check... There should be ZERO leakage even if a little negative leak it's bad....Check this first and in the repair you'll feel more confident.. Also this 'Echo carburetor is old school with both high and low speed needle valve adjustments for that smooth transition in between High/ low rpm's. Doing these two things is a great foundation for a good diagnoses

I think you are right, from the marks on the block it does look like the head was leaking. It does seem to run a lot better now but I guess the popping suggests valves. Running on load for a while could help a lot

Hi Artie, so you say this started after it revved up fast, so could it be something to do with the inner workings of the governor 🤔,or the timing off a fraction
@gravelymanКүн бұрын
I'm not sure if something happened to the governor or something happened in the engine causing it to over rev. It still remains a mystery. We will do a mowing test next time. Thanks for watching Nev 🔧👍

Artie I think you solved the biggest issue by replacing the head gasket. It looked blown to me in the video and the block was really sooted up in that area too. I do hear a little flutter in the exhaust every now and then though. Could the points in the magneto be causing that? I know sometimes in the old engines a worn valve guide can cause the exhaust valve to not seat properly sometimes and that can cause a flutter in the exhaust every now and then. It's hard to guess what's going on in an engine from 1956!
@gravelymanКүн бұрын
Thanks for your input Chris. I put my back up magneto on it with the same results. It is much better since head gasket replacement. We may have to dig deeper into the engine. Thanks for watching my friend 🔧👍

You’re getting there Artie. I was told to use oil on the head bolts. You get better torque on the bolts. I do three tightenings. Let’s say it’s 50 ftlb you need. I go to 30, let sit for 10 minutes or so, then to 40, let sit, then to 50. Just an example. Different looking engine than what I’m use too. Sort of a hemi head design. I find a lot of flat head small engines pop out the exhaust. The spark didn’t look right, but seemed to run. Take a break from it Artie. Then go back at it another day. Have a great Thursday Artie. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋🚜

Good on Artie. Gremlins. That’s what it is. They sneak around at nite to peoples garages and fool things up on you. I’ve had my share of them. Hehe. Hard to know what goes on Artie. I’ve put machines away at the end of the day, working good, and the next time you use them somethings wrong. I put a tractor in storage years ago. Drove it in. Sat all winter. The next spring it would not start. Took a used plug out of another engine and put it in. Tractor started right up. How does a spark plug go bad, sitting all winter not being used. 🤦🏻♂️. It’s a wonder I haven’t pull all my hair out over things like that. Have a great day and weekend Artie. 👋👋👍🏻👍🏻

I think I know what happened here. I just had something similar occur. You had the system open while working on your head gaskets, I had mine open while fixing a rotten hose that comes from the top of the block in that same area. When I got a new section of hose installed it fixed my coolant leak but then I lost heat inside the cab. I flushed like you did a few times and backwards a few times also checked the dash selector as you did here. Still didn't work. Then I wanted to see if it had flow so I opened the line just before the selector or actuator whatever. Turned the truck over but it had no flow. I was worried when you said yours had no water/coolant when you opened it. Mine had very little. I let truck idle for a good while but even when hot the coolant never flowed. I then grabbed the throttle body and rev'd the motor. Water then started to flow with higher rpm. I did that a few times then reconnected the coolant line to the selector valve. When I got back inside the cab the truck had heat again. Seems like that valve just needs to have the system primed/bled at that location. Cheers, this video still helped me dive into the trouble shooting. Thanks again!
