As a Handyman/ home repair specialist for 20 years. I ask you to please not become a handyman. There are far far too many people claiming to be handymen, but the unfortunate reality is many if not most of them are hacks who have no actual training in the things they attempt to do and cause damage and an even higher cost to fix what they have screwed up ! Just because there is money in it isn't justifiable reason for you to "Become" a handyman, most of us who have been doing this for a long time didn't just become handymen. Wee learned all he trades for many years before hanging out our shingles. So if you don't have experience in most if not all of the building trades, don't start selling yourself as a handyman until you do!

Do they crack down on handymen who do work without a license?
@SweatVenture7 күн бұрын
Operating as a handyman without a license can lead to legal consequences if you exceed permissible work limits like doing plumbing, electrical, or major structural jobs that require a contractor's license. In most states, handymen can perform small-scale repairs and maintenance without a license, but doing GC work without proper credentials can result in fines, legal action, or difficulties securing liability insurance.

You can always tell a rookie when they price a job too low
@SweatVenture7 күн бұрын
I would have to agree with this. As Jullian said in the interview, when his clients started calling him out for his low pricing, he was forced to increase his prices and he scaled as a result.

How do I know how much to price for new jobs?
@SweatVenture7 күн бұрын
Pricing jobs is a bit of an art form that is mastered over time, but a new handyman should research local market rates for similar services and factor in costs like materials, travel, and time to determine competitive pricing. Offering flat rates for simple tasks and hourly rates for more complex projects can help establish clear expectations with clients.

Gotta freshen this one up for the algorithm. :) Hardest part of starting your own shop is the fear of it not working out. Have to have a business mind set as well as being mechanically inclined to succeed.
@SweatVenture8 күн бұрын
Good point. Most businesses fail in the first 2-3 years. I would ad to "having a business mind set" to be OBSESSED with your business. It takes more than most realize.

What tools does one need to begin?
@SweatVenture8 күн бұрын
You'll most likely need basic tools like a drill, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, a tape measure, a utility knife, and a level, along with power tools like a cordless drill and saw. You should also consider investing in a reliable tool bag, safety gear (gloves, goggles), and a reliable vehicle to transport your equipment to job sites.

You gotta make money on both parts and make money on labor... customers dont like it but regardless same as a contractor for houses and shit u pay for experience u pay for us to work on some nasty ass rusty pos cars. Where can I see all requirements to open a shop? What must I obtain to get my shop going? Thank you
@SweatVenture16 күн бұрын
Starting an auto repair shop requires essential equipment such as a vehicle lift, diagnostic tools, air compressors, and a variety of hand and power tools (e.g., wrenches, jacks, and impact drivers). You'll also need a secure, well-ventilated workspace with ample room for vehicles, a reception area for customers, and storage for tools and parts. Securing necessary licenses, insurance, and compliance with local safety and environmental regulations is crucial. Of course, this is just a quick crash-course.
@chero1edwin14 күн бұрын
@ very informative. Got all the tools and location, am a little concerned about the licensing and any permits or documentation required. Thank you
