I never even heard this term until less than a year ago when I said something offhand and a friend asked if I was demisexual... I gave her a blank look because I was clueless. The definition seemed to line up with what I had heard every friend of mine ever talk about through high school. To me, people who didn't need an emotional connection for sex were weird because that's what's always shown in movies and books... the deviant who screws strangers or dates more than one person at the same time was the bad guy just by being shown that part of their personality. I recently got asked at work who my celebrity crush was and said I didn't understand how people liked someone they didn't even know and was good-naturedly teased for preferring personality. Then I started seeing behind the scenes videos and interviews with an actor I've always admired for their skill and started seeing them for who they really are (as opposed to their characters), because the internet has a lot of stuff we didn't have until recently, and I thought I could fall for that person if we got to meet in person. I figured that was what was going on, people feeling closer to celebrities because they saw them in a more personal light now that the internet makes distant people more accessible... but it turns out that's not what they meant. I've had 3 romantic relationships in my life, not that I didn't feel attached to anyone else, but that is how many reciprocated. My last S.O. before the one I married said when he broke up with me that it was my responsibility to say something if I wanted us to be exclusive, but in my mind we were having sex, so didn't that mean we were in love, and why wouldn't we be exclusive if we were in love? So I guess it's important to have labels, or at least differentiations, mostly so people realize not everyone has the same expectations when they get into a relationship.
