Excuse me, I am installing a new catalytic converter for my Pontiac g3 2010 and I got the part and it came with these three threaded studs as you are using in this video. When I attach it to the front exhaust pipe, is there suppose to be a gap between the two or will it snug into place as i tighten the nuts on the studs?

Aren't those "studs"?

Thanks for posting this...as many have said, this is a very old technique for installing a threaded stud. However, not all people looking things up on KZbin are seasoned experts and know all these techniques and tricks. And, BTW, your explanation and filming was great. Some of the "experts" are so spastic, both verbally and with their camera, the content is practically worthless. You did great.

If your bolt doesn't spin easily it's because the threads are messed up. If you look closely there's 1 of the threads that he stripped hanging on the stud when he removed it. This video should be called how to cross thread. Just go get a proper tap smh 🤦🏽‍♂️

Thanks, on my NB, I had to take the cover off and lube the spring through the little hole underneath it. Top lubing didn't loosen it up enough to make a difference.

Wow, that is incredibly simple and effective thank you. I would have struggled greatly trying to screw this in with one nut. My turbo lost one of its flange studs while I was taking out the catalytic converter on my Audi A4 b8.5. was semi concerned how I was gonna screw it in. Off I go to install my new test pipe!

The reason the manual tells you which way to install it is because it will slide on and locate easier the correct way around. Once installed, it makes absolutely no difference at all which way you have it, it's a coupler, and it is near indentical both ends. The end with the groove on the outside has bevels on the spines to help it locate and slip into place, for that to be of any use the coupler needs to be put onto the water pump before installation. If you install it reversed, it works the same, but you would install it on the drive shaft then install the pump. To suggest it'll overheat or run any different is a little odd, it physically can't change anything about how the engine runs or how it drives the pump. I know what the manual says, but i also know it doesn't say why GM wants it done that way, and the only reason why is so it'll line up the splines without undue effort.

The bevel on the engine end would certainly help if installing the coupler on the water pump first. Thanks for the tip.

Tardy to the party, just bend the catch on the lid closest to the rear bumper inward towards the hinge a millimeter or so at a time. Lube helps, but if the latch cannot depress the plunger far enough to clear the catch it doesn't matter. I have a different aftermarket lid so YMMV.

if the coupler is in good shape, no need ... just a lump of metal. Not like it's going to fatigue and shatter

For me personally it was the metal rod that goes into the cylinder. What i needed to do was slightly depress the clutch pedal and then aim wd40 at the point of the rod thats near the hole it goes into. Then i just kept pumping the pedal afterwards until it was fully silent.
