I'm just starting weight lifting. Any suggestions for a weight to start with. I'm 55.
@BeHealthyEnough8 күн бұрын
YAY!! I'm so happy you're working to build stronger muscles. They are the secret to longevity. This is a GREAT question and my response is...IT DEPENDS. It depends on what exercise you are doing, if you've been exercising before, if you have an injury...the key is for the weight to feel fairly heavy but allows you to keep good form. In my basic strength programs I have you use NO weights at first to get the form right and make sure you can go through the full range of motion. Then you start light and this could be 2-3 lbs or just a water bottle...or if you've been exercising you may be able to start with 5-8 lbs. I know you want a definitive answer but I wouldn't feel right about that without having even met you. If you want to build up your home gym I'd go to a Walmart or a sporting goods store and try a few out to see how they feel. You could pick up a few there or head to Amazon and get a nice little weight set. Here is link to my favorite on my web page behealthyenough.com/beginner-weight-set/ I hope this helps. I did do a short video on this question here kzbin.infowfUFQ84Y21g

I found this very educational and am going to try some of the suggestions. BUT I wish I could reach out to everyone (especially women) who do exercise videos and beg them to change one word. The adult human body has an abdomen or a belly. A two-year-old has a "tummy." They don't use "heinie" instead of glutes or butt, so can we make the rest of the vocabulary sound like they are talking to grown-ups?

Not close to it considering I’m 17 almost 18, but when does menopause begin? And does it end?
@WetOrchid.menopause.relief4 ай бұрын
Menopause usually begins for most women around in their fifties. But some women can start in their thirties, my sister and my mom started around 35 and 36. I started in my 50s. It can be exacerbated or brought on by medical conditions. So unfortunately what other people in your family went through is not necessarily a reflection of what you will go through. You'll notice because your periods will start to get a little wonky

@BeHealthyEnough4 ай бұрын
I don't think this will help with your gate issues (I had to look those up because I haven't heard of them). In fact I don't recommend these mobility routines at all. I hope you're working with a physical therapist to improve your strength and balance and doing exercise that will help strengthen your muscles and improve coordination. I did read that there are Orthopedic interventions such as Braces, splints, or orthotic devices can provide support and help with proper alignment while walking.

Hi, I just wanted to add some breakfast ideas. I can't do eggs, and I have been gluten, dairy and sugar free for 20 yrs (and yes, over 50 the weight still creeps up!) Many many years ago I was introduced to breakfast scrambles (no eggs): a meat - think l/o meat like chicken, ground beef, or even a turkey patty with some herbs added to make a sausage. Next is your starch: squash, sweet potato, plantain, carrots, potato - pick one. Next is your herbs or flavor - garlic ginger, onion, shallots, leek then add maybe some rosemary, thyme, sage or cinnamon - yum! Add in 1 or 2 vegies: Brocc, Caulif, green beans, zucchini etc. Toss in a handful of greens - kale, collards, spinach. And finally add a fat, just enough to sauté your tasty breakfast! I did this twice a week. On the other days, I did a homemade turkey sausage - ground turkey with sage and other herbs made into 2 oz patties. Freeze and pull out what you need the night before. We still do this today - 20 yrs later. Then I cook about 1/3 c oatmeal or 1/4 c oat bran. In a skillet while the turkey sausage is cooking, I toss in about a cup of Kale or Collards - this gives me my calcium as well as my "greens". Even my husband has taken to this. The kale is like Kale chips when it's done. Sometimes I add cinnamon to my oatmeal, or a small spoonful of fruit sweetened Crofters' strawberry jelly to my oat bran. It's such a small portion, I've never gotten into adding all the nuts, berries etc. We are eating to live, NOT living to eat....right???
