Pity you didn't really get it going in the end, did you ever find out what was wrong with it? It would be great to see a follow-up video where you get it to work properly. They burn really hot with a powerful blue flame when working properly, that was not even getting going in the video.

I think the main reason why people like these planes so much ie the way they cut is due to the thickness of their blades, in the old days things were made to a standard not a price!

What enamel did you use/recommend for the hood? It's a great shade of brown just like the original and must stand some heat. I'm currently fettling a Guardsman and he looks anything but at the moment 😂. Nice lamp tho
@OldtoNewRestorations

Actually it came to me like that, the hood was in great shape already and just needed a clean! Unfortunately I've yet to find any decent DIY-level enamel that will hold up to the heat and still look good.

I already know that this isn't a Coleman kerosene lantern with viynl plastic mantels required to be on the heaters rods. This lantern was manufactured by a different company. It has a different brand name.

The author of this educational video said that this antique brass postage scale must have a 1919 patent date! I know that it's so easy to head down the path of uncertainty these days. 📅 ⚖️ 😳 🤣 👏 😆 🙄 ⚖️

I definitely do remind these things. It's the Whitmore woodworkers vice. Since I've seen one of these tools in a 1980 and 1981 Branciforte Jr. High School. I really shouldn't have taken wood shop at first. I should've taken human biology when I was in the 7th grade. 🏫 😳 🤣 😂 😄 😀 🏫

Great job on the resto. Been using these a good long while. Over 30 years. As well as Taylors yacht stoves and heaters. The trick is to wait until the last possible moment to turn it on. When my igniter is just about to go out, I twist the valve, instant clean burn. The yellow flames will coat it in filth quicker than anything so just be patient and don't turn it on too soon. The same with the Taylors, a shot of meths, let it all burn, turn it on, instant blue flame. Happy burning!

You need a much bigger soldering iron like 100 to 150 watt and use an acid based flux, it will solder better. Acid based fluxs are liquid not paste and clean the surface better, work much better for this. Also a silver bearing solder flows really good here, Love the lantern great job,

To polish inside things like this, Get a length of hardwood dowel and cut a slot about an inch and a half (or 40mm ) down the centre. Then you can wrap wet and dry paper or soft cloth around the end and spin it with your electric drill! I have done this innumerable times over the years!! Lovely little bell restoration.

I have just bought one, same year as yours, but speculum/chrome finish which is a bit pitted, but a bit of solvol autosalve should tidy that up, hopefully not too much of the chrome is gone. The frame is quite rusty so will need a clean up and a bit of paint. The top/vent is chipped and rusty in places so will probably need renewing. I haven't got it yet so I am only going by the E-bay pictures, but I have every confidence I can return it to some of its former glory. Not sure how I will go about polishing the brass yet but I will think of something. Thanks for your video, I'm sure I will be referring to it quite frequently, but it doesn't look like rocket science so I am sure I will cope🤣🤣

Great. Please put what sorts of polish you are using on the mops next time. I''m learning the hard way to restore paraffin heaters and the founts (tank) are brass. 😑 They all have different types of aging, the one I am working on now was covered with some horrible sticky, gungy nonsense that I got off with a dremel but it has scratched it a bit. So bought a polisher / grinder thingy. I have some bars of polish but not really sure what to use when since they arrived unlabelled. Videos likes this are very helpful though, thanks a bunch x

Yes, they never label them properly! If you do some web searching you should be able to get them into some order - they're usually commonly coloured so you can match them up that way.
