Nah, that's just bad sketch writing. If you have to explain a joke (even stealthy), you failed the joke or the joke was bad to begin with. You didn't need to explain Rick James, Prince, Clayton Bigspy, Wayne Brady, etc..

Remember that if you keep things just vague enough and at least mildly expansive with a bunch of little details your readers will become obsessed with lore-hunting.

I actually watched that sketch once, but didn’t see the intro/explanation (probably looking at a text or something). I didn’t understand what was happening. So I went back and watched it again, this time seeing the intro. Laughed my ass off as a result.
