Who has invaded more countries in the last 75 years, Russia or the US? The money the US spends on 'defense' is actual spend to finance wars abroad and not in their own country. Nobody is threatening the US border.

This video is very misleading. Germany may be the largest economy in Europe but due to history (1939 - 1945) Germany is legally obligated to keep their military small. Plus the currency in Europe is NOT the US dollar.
@anta361218 сағат бұрын
That chart is misleading. These figures show how each country spends on their own military. Of its 3.5% military budget, the US spends only a small fraction of that on NATO (I believe 0.5%). The rest is spent on protecting US interests around the rest of the world. European countries, on the other hand, may spend less on their own military (some actually spend more like Poland for example), most if not all goes to NATO. This means that the US spends less on NATO than European countries. I know it's not what you've been told but all you have to do is use logic, do some basic math and if that fails listen to US generals who are/retired in NATO who will tell you the same thing.
@gerardflynn738218 сағат бұрын
Not all European countries are members of NATO.
@anta361218 сағат бұрын
@@gerardflynn7382 I know. Perhaps I should have specified European countries that are part of the alliance but I thought that was understood. Only those in the alliance are being criticised for not spending more on their own military as NATO doesn't have an obligation to defend those not in the alliance. This is why the Ukraine has been wanting to join NATO and why this was seen as a threat to Russia which led to its invasion.
@anta361218 сағат бұрын
Why don't these types of reports ever mention that NATO was formed to service US interests? Originally it was due to fear of communist expansion. It was convenient for the US to have military bases (particularly in Germany and Italy) as they are geographically strategic. Yet the American narrative makes it sound like the alliance was formed purely to protect Europe. After 1991 NATO really should have been dissolved. Why wasn't it? Another point that's never mentioned is that many European countries only very recently (2006 for the UK ad 2018 for Italy) finished paying their debt to the US for WWII. I hear Americans say how they saved Europe in WWII. The reality is that the US would have left us to rot had they not been attacked themselves. The US also made a ton of money from those they were "helping" (and all Americans I've ever spoken with, on the topic, downplay the help the allies gave the US in the Pacific). Americans have such an issue with Europeans having stability and social programs and put it all down to being "subsidised" by the US. This is nonsense because NATO is a peacetime alliance (wars are far more expensive) and used mostly as a deterrent and/or in defence. The only time NATO has been used to actively defend one of its members was after 9/11 (so it wasn't Europe being defended). Europeans have different objectives than the US. We've been focused on stability and social programs because these are the things that promote long-term security and peace. We know what it's like to have war on our own soil and after WWII the plan was to create an environment where that would not happen again. The US has never had to endure years of war on their own soil (have only had brief attacks: Pearl Harbor and 9/11). Thanks to geographical isolation, it's easy for them to cause chaos in other countries and then retreat to safety in their ivory tower. Americans can't stand that we have a better quality of life in Europe so want to undermine it. The US only profits when it can create the conditions for war so of course they're not happy. At least for America, NATO wasn't about keeping peace in Europe but about intimidating Russia (and the expansion of communism) by its presence (which is the stated reason for the invasion of Ukraine, ironically). It would never do for the US if Russia became bigger and more powerful. The US doesn't give a toss about Europe or promoting "democracy" but only its own skin and its own imperialistic goals. However, that's not what they American citizens are told. Americans are told that Europe takes advantage of the generosity of the US. Europeans are not meeting their obligations by spending at least 2% of their GDP is empty rhetoric. First of all this is a target, not an obligation, and second of all it's money that each country spends on its own military, not money owed to the US or NATO. It's not up to the US to dictate how much we spend on our own military and it's none of the US's business whether we prefer to spend on social programs. But, as the US is the biggest contributor (in terms of $ not in terms of %), they think they own us (conveniently forgetting that the alliance is just as much if not more in their interest than ours) and dictate how we should manage our own affairs. Yes, the US spends more of it's GDP on its own military but only a small fraction of that budget goes to NATO. In fact the US spends far less (in terms of % of its military budget) on NATO than many European countries do. Europeans may spend less of their GDP on their own military than the US spends on its military, but what they do spend goes entirely to NATO. Why? Because NATO is used only for defence (not offence which is more costly) whereas the US is a global power (European countries are not nor are we interested in bullying/being aggressive towards other nations like the US is) so US military spending goes towards policing the world, protecting its interests globally (not just Europe) as well as space programs. So, while I think European countries should up their game (especially as we've finished paying our WWII debts), it's really skewed logic to suggest that European countries should invest as much as the US in military spending. Americans are under the impression that NATO was formed to keep peace in Europe and Europeans know that the best way to keep peace is to create stability and the way to achieve that is to invest in social programs. The US, on the other hand, aren't really interested in peace because 1) they are geographically isolated which affords them protection from direct invasion 2) they make money from war. So of course their main priority is having a strong military (so they can intimidate/coerce other countries to get their own way) and a big GDP (so they can invest in the military which in turn is used to bully other countries into giving them have their way - which includes economic interests). The big GDP is created by unrestrained capitalism and lower taxes for corporations (so they don't have to invest in social programs). However, this creates a lot of misery for ordinary Americans. The American elite have found the solution to preventing civil unrest in the US: keep educational standards low so that people can't think critically, feed them false narratives about their own role in the world and how incompetent other countries are, tell Americans that they are right about everything (which is the reason why America is rich: not because they live on stolen land and the country was built and still is powered by exploitation even of its own citizens), indoctrinate them from a young age to believe that they live in the best country in the world and tell them lies about how other countries are freeloaders who take advantage of them. In Europe we have social programs because we pay higher taxes. The US could have the same if they invested their money differently. They wouldn't even have to reduce military spending. Despite heavy investment in its military, America has very low taxes compared to Europe so it could afford to increase them slightly in order to offer a few social programs. However, Americans don't want to pay more taxes as they have been conditioned to believe that social programs are bad (that they take away incentive which would be bad for production/the economy). This is what their leaders tell them and what's drummed into them since childhood. What their leaders fail to tell them is that the real reason is that the US government wants to keep corporations happy (to keep GDP high so that government has plenty of money to invest in its military) and corporations thrive on exploitation. It's far more difficult to exploit when citizens have fundamental rights. Social programs don't discourage incentive, they create a better quality of life which means a healthier and more productive workforce. The flip side, though, is that corporations can't make the same insane amount of money. The US system only benefits corporations not ordinary people. Americans don't realise that they are being duped. They only get it when they leave America to live elsewhere for a while and are able to see things clearly (not bombarded by relentless brainwashing/propaganda). So stop peddling this narrative that the reason Americans are suffering is because they are paying for Europe. I get that a con man like Tr0mp will say anything to keep people from understanding the real source of their issues because if they did they just might start to aggressively demand change from their own government.
