Unfortunately Voith delivered only a total of 20 Maximas and then retired from locomotive production so these heavy ones will remain a rare sight on tracks. It's hard to tell by what the last sovjet hulks in Germany finally will be replaced. I think it will be a mixture of electric units as there's still electrification in progress on certain lines and some new built diesels, however a lot of private operators meanwhile run british class 66 units. The most interesting new design to me currently is Stadler's latest project EuroDual railcolornews.com/category/stadler-rail/stadler-rail-eurodual/ which cobines a full size mainline electric- and diesel-locomotive. We'll see who probably can (and likes to...) afford monsters like these in the future.

Es sieht leider schlecht aus. Die Lok steht defekt und mit Fristablauf bei Bombardier in Kassel. Sie ist nicht öffentlich zugänglich, eine Aufarbeitung ist derzeit nicht geplant.

Unter Last wird es naturgemäß eher noch lauter. Ich habe das aber nicht als störend empfunden. Es ist ja nur das Geräusch der Hydraulik. Die Lüfter selbst sind durch ihre aerodynamisch optimierten Blätter kaum zu hören.

Da ist alles in Ordnung. Die Dinger laufen so. Mag sein, dass der Klang durch die Kamerabewegung unterschiedlich wirkt. Der Motor war zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme kaum vier Monate alt.

Keineswegs. Lokführer haben ihr Essen zu allen Zeiten so oder ähnlich erwärmt, lange bevor LKW-Kutscher die Straßen verstopften.

Generally yes. They are similarly spec'd with fast running engines and hydraulic transmissions also west-german Bundesbahn chose for their mainline diesels from the early 1950s onwards: BRs Westerns use twelve-cylinder Maybach-Diesels MD 655 and Voith-Gearboxes L 630 rU, basically also to be found in several german Classes and Railcars. Wiebes V 320 001 is fitted with sixteen-cylinder prime-movers Mercedes-Benz MB 839 Bb and Voith L 218 rs-Transes. These equipment also powers german Class 216-Locos and the engines partially also 216s relatives 215 and 217.

Ich habe heute 2 Gelbe Lok alias Wiebe in Koblenz Lützel am Güterbahnhof gesichtet. Konnte leider die Nummer nicht erkennen, weil der RE von Koblenz nach Köln recht schnell fuhr. In Koblenz Lützel ist wohl ein Bautrupp zu Gänge. Gruß aus Andernach.

+TheNecromancer6666 The MB 839-Series origninally was designed in the 1950s by Mercedes-Benz-Dieselmotorenbau GmbH/Stuttgart ("MB") which bought up it's competitor Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH ("MD"), located at Friedrichshafen near Lake Constance, in 1966 to create a new company called Maybach-Mercedes-Benz-Motorenbau GmbH ("MMB"). In 1969 this Firm after all merged with the Product-Division for midsize-Diesel-engines of Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG ("MAN") at Augsburg and formed the final group Motoren und Turbinenunion ("MTU"). All types of engines, including the MB 839s, since then are built at former Maybach-Facilltiy/Friedrichshafen. Later on MTU was purchased by external investors, renamed into Tognum AG in 2006, and today trades under the name Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. The production of MB 839-engines endet in 2009. The two power-plants, currently installed in V 320 001, were made in 1969 and 1970.

Wenn man bedenkt daß man vor so einer länge des Zuges 2x218 davor gespannt hätte, dann ist es schon bemerkenswert wieviel Leistung unter der 320 steckt. Schade daß sich die Bahn damals lieber für die Elektrifizierung entschieden hat, anstatt noch ein paar von diesen Loks bauen zu lassen. Nichts gegen 218, aber die 320 ist halt noch eine richtige Diesel Lok. ;-)

Ehrlicherweise hätte man diesen Leerpark durchaus auch mit einer 216, 218 o. ä. bespannen können. Ich meine mich zu erinnern, dass der Zug etwa 800 t wog. Für die V 320 war es jedenfalls keine nennenswerte Last.

It's a completely different procedure to design and built entire locos instead of just making good transmissions. To date the Voith locomotive production doesnt't proceed satisfying at all: Maxima models phased out already and from the Gravita family only eighteen more units are to be delivered. New orders are still missing.

I wonder...why didn't Voith start making locomotives earlier? They were in the business for a long time of building massive hydraulic transmissions which are used in everything from turbine starters to rolling mills to freight locomotives...but only recently have they put their expertise into manufacturing their own locomotives.

There are two Voith L 218 rv-transmissions installed in V 320 001, the same type used in Prototype-V 160s (216 001 - 216 010) and predecessor of L 821 rs that works in V 160 production version (216 011 - 216 224). Maximum power input is 1770 hp for L 218s or 1820 hp for L 821s.
