Anfahrt eines Güterzuges von 1500 t mit Voith Maxima 40 CC (264 011-8, Wiebe Nr.13) aus dem Stand auf etwa 40 km/h in Sande bei Wilhelmshaven. Rundgang durch den Maschinenraum bei Teillast. Diese Lok wurde im Oktober 2018 an die NRS Nordic Rail Service GmbH in Lübeck verkauft.
German high performance diesel locomotive Voith Maxima 40 CC (264 011-8, Wiebe No.13) ramps up a 1500 t freight train out of Sande near Wilhelmshaven, Germany at night. Walkaround inside engine room. This vessel was sold to NRS Nordic rail service GmbH/Lübeck in October 2018.

Compared to many other modern power plants the entire engine to me exudes a reminiscent mood of a let's say "Phileas Fogg- design" or something like that. Very nice! :)

@Dokker62 I am surprised to read that the drag for the liquid fuel was so high and continued to pull back the locomotive. for so much of a time. One thing I noticed was that the ABC motor was kept nearly steady at 6th notch (around 800rpm) - wouldn't be more economical to accelerate the train at maximum power, then coast at idle power? (200 rpm) Or the diesel hydraulics need constant power transmission? Regards from warm Athens, N.F.

anyway its is a 5000hp locomotive. not often see this kind of marvels every day.

@alcosound We intended an acceleration up to 80 km/h (~ 49,7 mph) crossbench any fuel consumption matters but just currently couldn't put "the pedal to the metal" due to slippery tracks. A few minutes (IOW: miles) later when outside conditions went better we horsed her up and rushed away. Despite notchless power adjustment the vessel sometimes seems to "think" about your orders for a moment and feels a little bit dull then but quite okay so far. She's really nice to handle. Cheers

Ah, and when I said 'notches' I meant it as a metaphor (I thought that the throttle had steps like USA locomotives - heck, even our Adtranz/Bombardier DE2000 have a clicking throttle, and I assumed they had 8 steps like the traditional USA diesels) Cheers, N.F.

Has a big power plant over there a 4 stroke monster i believe. How i heard currently it is the strongest diesel hidraulic machine. The americans cant admit this. just mecause they dont managed to build this kind of machines. I but i believe this came up with a grate succes. Nice video thanks for sharing.

Interesting video. But there was no microwave oven available?!? We are in 2011, you know... :-) Heating the food inside the engine reminds me the famous 'steam locomotive cooking' methods (scrambled eggs and bacon into the boiler). Is the locomotive the Wiebe one I shot at Innotrans? I suppose the performance was very good, if the company decided to buy it. Any problems with the reliability of the machine? I saw some clothes on the end of the video - are there leaks? Cheers, N.F.

Unfortunately Voith delivered only a total of 20 Maximas and then retired from locomotive production so these heavy ones will remain a rare sight on tracks. It's hard to tell by what the last sovjet hulks in Germany finally will be replaced. I think it will be a mixture of electric units as there's still electrification in progress on certain lines and some new built diesels, however a lot of private operators meanwhile run british class 66 units. The most interesting new design to me currently is Stadler's latest project EuroDual railcolornews.com/category/stadler-rail/stadler-rail-eurodual/ which cobines a full size mainline electric- and diesel-locomotive. We'll see who probably can (and likes to...) afford monsters like these in the future.

@Dokker62 Thanks for the additional data. One thing that mystified me is, how do you have 1500 tonnes pulling at 200 kN the locomotive? I expected a flat territory at Sande, judging from Google Earth, and 1500 tonnes at 200 kN translates to approximately 1.2% grade. Or is there so much resistance from the wheels, etc.? Regards, N.F.

@alcosound Maintenance is still Voith's job in most cases so far as warranty concerns many things to be done in the early days. Later on Wiebe will do more and more in house but their main attention traditionally is the track laying machinery and servicing of the locos only a minor part of workshop action. New vessels like the Maxima will be longterm cared predominantly by their manufacturer as on-site support.

@alcosound Exactly, that's Wiebe´s No 13 shown at InnoTrans last year. Reliability is good so far as we talk about "normal" initial quirks which accompany new developments like oil or water leakages in this case. That's what the clothes were for. Performance is really fine although she prones a little to wheelspin as all new locos do due to her lovely soft rolling undercarriage linked to disc brakes. And of course there was a microwave oven available. You just have to buy it... ;-) Greetz!

@kdlehel Your´re absolutely right: 16 pistons, 2 Turbochargers, 255, 2 Liters (~ 15573 cubic inches) of displacement, a weight of 18 tons and a four stroke operating technique.

@alcosound The liquid doesn't pull back the loco nameable harder than other goods, I would say. It's just 1500 t of weight to be ramped up. Maximum power in this particular case likely would have caused wheelspin due to damp weather conditions so about 3/4 throttle was used. And there are no notches to be chosen. Performance adjustment works continuously variable in this vessel ;-)

@Dokker62 Sounds good. A friend who is driver for DB tried one, and he was favorably impressed. Do you do the locomotive service in-house, or at the Voith workshop? If I buy one, I'll ask for the microwave oven option and a freezer (it's hot in Greece) :-) :-) Cheers, N.F.

@Dokker62 Thanks for the clarification. What is the typical diesel fuel consumption per kilometer in these beasts? I saw in another video a consumption of 950 liters/hour, and I was a little shocked... By the way, yesterday I received my first Maxima 40CC (in 1/87 scale, unfortunately - the 1/1 scale will take some time in coming :-) And no, there was not a microwave option in the model :-) ) Cheers, N.F.

@alcosound The video you mention shows a cab ride on a 40 CC accelerating a load of about 4500 t hooked up from 0 to ~ 60 km/h, I think. According to this heavy effort a current consumption like this should be valued not to high. In general the Maxima needs approximately the same amount of fuel as V 320 001 does. 4 - 9 Liters per Kilometer may be realistic dependent on the train to be hauled and distance profile.

@alcosound The display you adverts to shows a current tractive effort of nearly 150 kN, not 200, and your're right: There is no appreciable acclivity in this area. The roll resistance of the loaded tank cars is affected by the liquid's inertia (Diesel fuel, if I remember correctly...). The train still accelerated when this video was shot. Drag force abated more and more further on as speed increased. kind regards

Keineswegs. Lokführer haben ihr Essen zu allen Zeiten so oder ähnlich erwärmt, lange bevor LKW-Kutscher die Straßen verstopften.

@Dokker62 Let me clarify my idea: You have 1500 tonnes and you want to keep an average speed of 40 km/h on a flat route, OK? If you let the engine idle, the train will roll for (say) 3 km before speed drops to 35 km/h. Then you open the throttle towards maximum power, and you reach 45 km/h. If you leave the engine to idle, you may coast for 3+ km before speed falls below 40 km/h. Wouldn't this be more economic than have the engine running continuously at 600+ rpm? Cheers, N.F.
