Why not coconut oil
@PreservingSweetness
@PreservingSweetness 29 күн бұрын
Hey Jason! You can use coconut oil to season cast iron, but it's just not one of my top choices because I like to use an oil with a milder flavor. Sometimes, the flavor of the seasoning on the cast iron can transfer to the food, so that's why I don't recommend olive or coconut oil. We all have our favorites, though, and use what we are most familiar with. Some oils have a lower smoke point, and the seasoning process has to be adjusted. Thanks for commenting!

@PreservingSweetness
@PreservingSweetness Ай бұрын
It doesn't have to be made with a stand mixer, but a stand mixer makes it much more manageable. Without one, you have to hold the hand mixer with one hand, then lift the pot and pour the sugar/water mixture with the other. It's harder, but can be done. In fact, I've done it myself. One thing I try to stress in my videos is that you don't have to have a lot of gadgets to cook and can. You use what you have to work with and substitute for things you don't have access to. Thanks for the question!

Hey, Louis! That is the same cake my mother made for my birthday cakes. My grandmother showed how to make Southern Sweet tea when I was 5 yrs old. Almost 60 yrs old now and everyone has begged for me to make them tea for years. Yes, the trick is you habe to add the sugar to the hot water to dissolve the sugar. This is how my grandmother taught me. Almost identical to yours, but just extra steps. Here is the proper way to make it: 1. Use1 family size or 12 small tea bags of Louisana Tea. If I use the smallntea bags, I tie my small tea bags together at the top and remove the paper squares off the top of the string. Make sure the staples, holding thee little paper tags are removed as well, if the small tea bags have the strings on them. 2. Bring 1 liter of water to a boil. Pour the broiling water into your tea jug. Slowly insert your tea bags into the hot water. Take a large wooden spoon and push the tea bags down in the water. Cover the tea jug and let set for 15 mins or a little longer. I let it set until it's the color I prefer. 3. Open tea jug. Use wooden spoon and remove tea bags into a small strainer and set on top of tea jug. Add 2 cups of sugar (or less, depending on how sweet you like it) 4. Set the strainer to the side, in a clean sink. Stir sugar and the hot tea water until sugar has dissolved. 5. Set strainer back on top of tea jug. Fill with cold water, slowly over tea bags, stopping about every cup and stir your tea. Continue until tea jug is filled. You will have to squeeze the tea bags out easily when your tea jug is 3/4 full. Throw tea bags away. Remove strainer. Finish filling tea jug. Stir real good one last time. Put lid on jug and put in fridge until cold. NOTE: I use only purified water to make my tea. I also use organic sugar and not the white sugar. I also use Louisana Tea Bags only. I never use the sweet tea bags. Just the plain Louisiana Tea bags. Makes the best southern sweet tea ever! Good luck and enjoy your Southern Sweet Tea. I also use a 1 liter water boiler to speed the process up. I bought one of these wonderful kitchen accessories and I will never live without it again. They are amazing. They also spped up cooking process of things that need to be boiled. I heat my water and then pour in the pan I need to cook with the boiling water. My macaroni takes no time to make now. I pour the rolling boiling water, from my water heater into pan, set my pan on the already heated electric stove top or gas fire and within seconds the water is back to boiling. I add my macaroni and its done so much quicker. If you need more or less water, just make another pot or less water. The water is at a rolling boil in about 1 min or less in the water heater. It's a God send! ~Soulshine⚘️

Hey, Soulshine! Thanks for the recipe. It's very close to mine. I like to add the sugar first and stir it up well to dissolve it, then add the tea bags to prevent breaking the tea bags while stirring the sugar. I have also used Louisiana tea bags, but I find even the store brands make good sweet tea. Also, what are sweet tea bags? I'm not familiar with those. I use plain black tea, although I've been known to make sweet tea with Earl Grey, Green Tea, or Chamomile from time to time. I like my electric kettle also, but I've never used it to cook things like macaroni and rice. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks again for the comment! I love to see what other people are doing and love to learn new ways of doing things.

Hey, Allison! I think you have a treasure there. My jellies last 5+ years, but even though the jam will also be good for that length of time, it usually begins to discolor after about 2 years and is no longer visually appealing. So, the combination of canning and refrigerating should mean that the jam will be good for many years. As long as the seal is still in place with no other signs of spoilage, it should be just the same as when prepared. I did read something about this topic, and I can't remember where it was, but most people don't do this because they don't have enough extra space in their refrigerators. Thanks for the comment. I'd love to know how it tasted and whether the color had changed!

Hey, Alison! Thanks for this comment. My homemade jelly stays good for 5+ years when stored in a cool, dry area away from any heat or light source. Unfortunately, even though the jam stays good for several years, it begins to discolor after 2-3 years and is no longer visually appealing. If it were stored in a refrigerator after canning, that should keep the color and the texture from changing. But the problem with that is that most people don't have enough refrigerator space to store their canned food. As long as any canned food is still sealed with no obvious damage, it should stay good for years, and if it could also be refrigerated, that would prolong its shelf life indefinitely. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion after making jelly and jam for many years. I've never tried doing both. I would like to know whether the color was still good in the jar of jam that you mentioned.
