I have a completely painted set up now, and no body to play regularly. Back in the old country, I converted it out to use my 28mm 40k and necromunda minis, using the current 40k rule set. Played it once. It needed some tuning but, worked the first time. I didn't want to spend money on a new scale of figures for a game that I might play once a year. in retirement I talked to my historical miniatures club, and spent the money to set up the game, after I thought people would play it. I am still wrong.

Excellent work Sean. Mine own painting style is very similar. Fascinating to hear the background on the PP 14th army range. I picked some up to use in AK47 and thought they were lovely. Hopefully the interest in the Lardie Far East supplement might up the sales a bit. My dad was RAF in WW2 (and after) engaged in airfield construction and maintenance in NW Europe from DDay onwards. The RAF Regiment seemed to have been heavily involved in relieving line units on 'quieter' sectors. In Italy, for example, they were equipped with plenty of mortars to help hold positions, especially as less need for Light Anti-aircraft as the war progressed. Maybe Far East was the same.

AK47 Republic is my all time favourite set of rules and this video coincides with a reawakening of my interest. I have been watching a lot of movies set in modern African conflicts recently and looking at my lead pile wondering what to paint up before enjoying another game. Thanks for fuelling my enthusiasm a little further.

@@billygoatwargaming5643 So far I have re-watched 'The Dogs of War','The Wild Geese', 'The Mercenaries', 'Blood Diamond', 'Tears of the Sun' and 'Black Hawk Down'. 'The Dogs of War' is certainly the worst but I still enjoyed it (got more from it than the last viewing). Next up I intend to re-watch 'The Battle for Algiers' which is a more thoughtful film rather than an action movie but worthy of attention.

Interesting and insightful. Would love to listen to the "early days" from a collector perspective. I'd love to learn more about the actual sculptors since we're witnessing the technology move away from sculpts, metal castings and towards 3D printing.

Note, the destroyed People's Popular Front armoured car @45:25 would count as a "dead marker" within 3" of the remaining tank (the T-34), so that would actually be a moral factor of -3 (-1 for being fired at with a tank gun, -1 for a destroyed model, -1 for being within 3" of a dead marker). Likewise, the attacking infantry in the farm @47:10 should have failed their morale on a roll of "4" if they were within 3" of 4 friendly dead markers as it is "per 3 or part thereof" (i.e. 4 markers rounds up to a -2 morale factor). Incidentally, I am not sure there actually *are* 4 dead markers within 3 inches, but you mentioned there were in the video.
@billygoatwargaming56432 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Dave. I was very rusty on the rules!
@willkilla2 жыл бұрын
Dead markers only add a morale loss per every 3, not 1. 4 dead markers would be a -1 morale afaik

Just a couple quick points: the ZARP Dictatorship should have lost six Militia stands from only one of their units, not both (see the wording of the People's Popular Front flow chart that had this result). Also, the difficulty to bring units onto the table remains at the last failed difficulty number, so unit 5 of the ZARP forces should have been able to come on with a "5" as it was still testing under the "Third defender unit" difficulty of 5 or 6.

I know this is a year late, but when rolling, isn’t it the number of units on that impacts the target number? IE when you rolled for the defenders number 3 unit it needed a 5-6. You didn’t get it. The next unit would still need a 5-6. It’s only when you have 3 units on the field that it goes up to 6?

Thanks for posting, I have been looking forward to this video. RoF is intriguing and, like all Peter Pig rule sets totally distinctive. It wasn’t clear to me what the overall effect of the extensive pre-game was on the battle that followed. Still I think I have enough to carry out my own solo experiment now.

Nice to see some of these more obscure rules, pity we don't get people playing some of those older ones. I would like to try out that Sci-fi set. I have a few bags of PP sci-fi figures but have not opened them yet. I sort of feel it would be a shame to open the packets now I cannot get them any more! Still there are plenty of 15mm scfi troops available to use as substitutes. Interesting that you mentioned the Square Bashing rules including the Chaco War. During lockdown whilst shielding I have painted up two full armies fof this war, fof Bolivia and Paraguay, complete with the Bolivian armour, Carden Lloyd, Vickers 6t etc. It would be good to find a couple of people to play this using my armies whilst I could take photographs of the game and do a write up of the battle step by step! Maybe when the club starts up again? Much of the Mexican style scenery would fit for this war as well I feel, lots of scrub, cacti etc. Not to mention railways.

Enjoyed the nostalgia. I have several of these rules and am particularly fond of AK47 and Hammerin Iron. I have Square Bashin and the Samurai rules but have never played them, partly from hesitancy about gridded games. I am trying to overcome this at the moment by teaching myself 'Western' but I have to say I have been hugely disappointed. I am really struggling to understand them and there seem to be huge gaps in the explanation whilst space is taken up with padding trying to create 'ambience'. I will perservere but doubt they will become a favourite of mine like AK47. Did I hear you say there was a ruleset called Hoka Hey? That might suit my needs instead, but I am now placing much hope in the revival of Pony Wars by Baccus.

Thanks for posting this fascinating trip through the last few decades of RFCM rule books. Props for having played most of them - as you say, most long term war gamers have large rules collections. The first rules I bought were set of (7? 8?) from Don Featherstone editor of Wargamers Newsletter for which I sent a postal order. Recently I seem to have started accumulating Peter Pig / RCFM rule books and hope to start playing (solo alas) with the right inspiration. You remember that you have promised a Regiment of Foote video?
