I really like this method of welding the top plate on. Probably the best overall. As far as the plate losing its hardness from the welding heat, if you or anyone else tries this method again, give it some time between welds to let it cool down below the tempering level you are looking for. Might just be enough to avoid a separate hardening operation. If you can keep the temp between 400 and 500 degrees F the whole time it might turn out just right. Depending on the alloy of the plate of course. Some steel with a higher tempering heat window if you have the luxury of a choice of steel.

Sweet, it reminds me of this old dude i knew in the shipyard, he was THE guy for fixing giant ship anchors. He had this old 400amp heli-arc stick/tig machine, and he'd do like what you did on your anvil, just bevel it out enough that he could reach in to the chocolaty center hah. Really cool guy, we tried not to bother him unless we got real real stuck with something, but man, if you needed something weird done, like taking twist out of an 80 ton work boat, he was your dude, hah. Cut it here and here, jack this part up 6" lower that side 3" I try not to think of all the specialized trade knowledge we are losing every day, cause it bums me out, lol

If you had made the anvil from a single piece of steel, then I would have been impressed.

The horn was put on upside down. The workspace with metal under it to the base looks to be 3 inches. As artwork, it is quite nice. As a working anvil, it is quite limted.

Not a real anvil or quality anvil because the face is not fully forge welded on. So there is a gap between the face and body of the anvil. Even though it is micriscopic that gap does take away somenof the force from the hammer blows. A "REAL" ANVIL is either cast from all tool steel or the face is Forge welded on for a full connection to the main body of the anvil.

My only critticism is the form of your horn. Its flat it should be round or at least oval shape.

If you want it even quieter put some sylicon un der the anvil. It will kill all ringing

Could you potentially put a center on the table of your drill press, drill a center hole in your workpiece, and then turn it or file it by hand like you would on a lathe?

Рог приварен неправильно. Ваш шов держится на маленьком участке, сверху. При трещине в этом районе все шов разорвется. Разделка до 2/3 толщины рога спасет это дело.

I thought you did really well on this there was areas where people that know how to work steal didn't have to guess what you were doing and from the standpoint of this video The anvil looks really well fabricated and can't wait to see your hardening process.

Nice build! Looks classy. My suggestion is to make a pull-out ash box at the bottom part to remove accumulated ash regularly (maybe pulled out from the side or back part). You can also modify your hinge to hold the door perpendicular to the body when open (parallel to the ground) - that way it can support the burning firewood.
@theironkiwi2948 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Russel, I think I might zip cut the back out and do that. Seems like it would be hard to clean as it is now. And thanks for the idea about the door, I might weld a peg on below to keep it supported.

I don't want to be critical but you could easily clamp that together and it also could be glued with construction adhesive. I run into the tree timmers in my city and they gave me a big stump. Takes two people to move.
