Ann C Crispin will always have my admiration for the job she did with her novelization of that most dearly beloved old TV serial of mine: the original “V”. I treasure the paperback. (I believe I once lent it as a gift to a young lady I met in grad school, and never got it back, so I bought a new copy which I have). In that grad school where I was, chance, or something else (I don’t believe in chance), had me meet the daughter of Marc Singer’s first college sweetheart (Marc Singer famously played the Resistance’s hero in the V TV Serial ). If I remember well, I even briefly spoke on the phone with that former girlfriend of Marc’s. More recently, it has been my great pleasure to exchange a couple of messages with “V”’s original creator Kenneth Johnson.

Interesting difference from the Terry Pratchett method of 'start a book right after you finish the previous one'. I guess that explains the difference in novel count.

I'm very much feeling the 'not today' angle on things. As a biker, I have the choice to not survive any given ride. I choose to live to ride another day.

Ah-ha! I thought as much; he went back and added bits, and stuck the fancy ideas in ahead of time to write between. I'll have to try that myself, although I feel I need more of a plan than he implies. Discworld holds a very special place in my heart, though. It's the first book series I really got into, and it was a companion through my teenage years. It's pretty much why I'm able to devour books in a few days now; how else was I going to get through the books before I had to hand them back to the library?

Ahhh, Sir Terry. He made a world simply for fun, and we get to enjoy his genius through it. To me, his works are more alive and relevant than Tolkien or Martin. While I appreciate their work I felt at arm’s length from their world. Pratchett, in his way, welcomed you into Discworld and even the footnotes he provided was as though he was a friend nudging you and whispering extra facts to you, so you wouldn’t be alarmed. Overall, as a fantasy writer, he has won me over more than the high fantasy/high drama fiction out there. There’s not enough words in the world to express the depth of his writing.

Sam Vimes feels like the expression of pTerry’s righteous anger with the world. He sees the problems, the injustices, and wants to set them right or at least have them acknowledged whether that’s the wealthy enslaving a race of beings because they can or a maid taking candle ends home from the palace because her family are poor but fearful of her job because she the main wage earner.

Sir Terry Pratchett changed my life. I've not had the worst life or the best, not by a long shot, but I encountered the tragedy of death fairly often, and I had many a brush with it myself. The Death of Discworld completely changed my perspective on my mortality. From there, more of my life was changed. You'll always have a place on my shelf, and in my heart, Sir Pratchett.

I'm from Ukraine, and the only book, which is translated into russian, was Down from Lilith’s Brood series. So, after reading it, I was impressed big time and started to learn English faster to be able to read rest of her books in English lnguage. Now I've almost read all her novels and I must say it is the most thoughtful, clever and amazing books, not only in sci-fi genre, I've ever read!

I knew her personally. She was a patient at a practice where I worked in Maryland many years ago. She had a large place in the country and she loved horses. She had some health problems which, in my opinion caused her to pass on too soon. God have her in His loving embrace.

I do love Sam and Sybil. An urchin from the lowest part of Ankh Morpork and a lady (the Richest Lady) from the top tier of society...and they click. Each gets insight into parts of society they never really understood. Sam is learning about the rich...and Sybil is ... she's just so very wonderful. She meets people that members of her "class" either despise or don't care about...or even refuse to accept their existence, and she melts the hearts of those lower class members with whom she comes into contact. She treats them exactly the same, with the same dignity and respect as she does with her supposed "peers," and in doing so she teaches Sam a lot about what true noblesse oblige really means. Not as a stapled on "you have to do this even though it disgusts you" issue but because she does care about pretty much everyone. It's really a brilliant essay on what nobility should be as opposed to what it degenerates into over centuries.

Sam Vimes is probably the best fleshed out character in Sir Terry's works. The only other character who comes close is Granny Weatherwax, but her past is only given to us in bits and pieces. But Sam...we know him. We even get to see mature Vimes interact with himself in a younger time. It's really amazing. (Courtesy of the Monks of Time.)

This man and his writing are one of the brightest guiding lights of my life. The books are so full of different layers of thought and interpretation, so many jokes that I didn't get until 2 or 3 reads in. And rib aching fits of laughter that sneak back up on you 2 hours, 2 days, 2 years, 2 decades later. I fully expect in a future life to suddenly break out laughing at something I read in one of his books.
