Certainly does. The majority of shanks I have to create are designed in this manner and all cast without issue.

I was wondering if this method for creating that sharp point on the shank is compatible with putting melee stones on the shank. I have been struggling to get any of the gems/cutters to work with this method

You can always use the gem on surface command to place your gems.

how do you determine the specific gravity of your desired metal you want to use

From a quick google search; If the density of a substance is known, to calculate the specific gravity of a substance simply divide the density of the substance by the density of water or air.
