Sadako is too clean. Her presentation doesn’t fit the grimy narrative as well (pun intended) and it doesn’t serve the overarching story as effectively. Her story is a sad and gross one. We won’t even get into the book with how gnarly (and problematic) it was, but suffice to say, an overall grittier characterization is more appropriate. The more modernized film shots and tableaus in the remake are also more effective at creating unease and powerlessness than the original shots, while not going overboard on CGI effects like so many other horror movies have in these past couple decades. Also, not sure how some people say her character movement looks less abnormal in the remake. I’d say the opposite- I think a lot of people who aren’t particularly familiar with the films want to flex some sort of hip contrarian hot take. Lately it seems like lot of people aren’t necessarily knowledgeable fans of the media subject matter itself, they’re just fans of the novelty of “analogue” or “retro,” so old is just automatically gold. Half the people commenting have honestly probably never even seen the movie 🤷‍♂️
