Henry, I feel slightly annoyed at myself for not playing more of you Guqin practice videos. As a classical pianist myself, I'm 46 now and have been playing and learning the piano since I was 10 years of age - in the "European" style of the classical music arts throughout its many centuries, era, decades of change. Say from Medieval to modern 20th/21st century compositions...I love it all. Hearing this one video just now is amazing! You know, when I first started my self taught (with a few youtubers as yourself as guides) from my Western Watercolor (WC) world into the fantastic and ancient, practically indescribable Chinese Brush Painting...through this media of Chinese type WC it's not only given me an appreciation for the artistic side of the Eastern World, but also China as a country. It's many mountain ranges which are simply extraordinary and deserving of their UNESCO World Heritage honors. I find myself hungry for things Chinese and Japanese, respectively. Not to get too sidetracked, for I wanted to focus on your music ability, and ask a few questions if I might. first of all I was trying to compare the Gupin to something Western, just to make a little sense of its range, etc. The only thing, size wise, I can think of is a cross between the harp and possibly a cello. If you can imagine that...only such a hybrid being played horizontally versus vertically as one would the harp, cello, string bass, etc. What is the range of this instrument. I know I could easily google it, but it's so much more fun to correspond. Also, a beautiful piece as this one, how long did it take to memorize, or is the sheet music in front of the instrument off camera? Oh, also, where would one acquire such a beautiful instrument (to my novice ears as far as Eastern Instruments are concerned), your Guqin seems to be top notch as well as highly crafted with EXCELLENT resonance. Okay, one last question, I swear. In the beginning, after the pseudo-glissandi...are you playing the strings in "chimed" fashion. You know, harmonics? It seems to me you are and so many harmonics in succession is no easy thing. Bless you Henry, for sharing your musical gifts with those interested. I know I will be paying a lot more attention to this kind of upload from you! You are truly a marvelous human being! James M Thaxton

Hi James, Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt comment! It’s wonderful to connect with someone who has such a deep appreciation for music, art, and culture across traditions. I’m honored that my Guqin practice resonated with you, and I appreciate your kind words about my playing-it means a lot coming from a classical pianist with your level of experience and dedication. To address some of your wonderful questions and thoughts: Comparison to Western Instruments: Your comparison of the Guqin to a hybrid of the harp and cello, played horizontally, is insightful! It is indeed an ancient instrument with a range that may seem modest compared to the piano or harp-it spans about four octaves. However, its expressive power lies in the subtlety and nuance of tone, achieved through a combination of plucked notes, glissandi, and harmonics. Robert van Gulik’s book "The Lore of the Chinese Lute" offers a fascinating exploration of the Guqin’s historical and cultural context, which you might enjoy. Notation and Memorization: The Guqin uses a unique form of musical notation called Jianzi Pu (简字谱), which combines numeric symbols with ancient fingering instructions rather than pitch and rhythm notation. It guides players on string position, finger movement, and technique. This particular piece, Mist and Clouds Over the Xiang River (瀟湘水雲), is considered one of the most challenging in the Guqin repertoire. It comprises 18 sections, and my teacher and our small Zoom class have spent over a year learning just the first third of it. I do play from notation during practice sessions but aim for memorization as I internalize each section. Harmonics (Chime Tones): You are absolutely correct about the harmonics (we call them fan yin, 泛音). The Guqin's harmonics are one of its most captivating features, produced by lightly touching specific points along the strings. In this piece, the harmonics symbolize the ethereal and fleeting nature of mist and clouds, beautifully tying the music to its poetic theme. It’s wonderful that you picked up on this detail! Acquiring a Guqin: I acquired my Guqin from a specialized maker who crafts high-quality instruments with exceptional resonance. If you’re interested in learning more about the Guqin or finding an instrument, I highly recommend visiting my teacher's website: guqin.org. It’s an incredible resource for information about the Guqin, its history, notation, and even online classes. Thank you again, James, for your thoughtful engagement and questions. It’s always a joy to share and exchange with fellow enthusiasts of music and culture. I’m thrilled to hear you’ll be keeping an eye out for more of my Guqin videos-your encouragement is truly motivating! Wishing you continued joy in your artistic and musical explorations, Henry

I am tired and don't want to touch it anymore. I still have 89USD in OKX wallet but I am too lazy to withdraw it. Here is the mnemonic of OKX wallet (<pride>-<pole>-<obtain>-<together>-<second>-<when>-<future>-<mask>-<review>-<nature>-<potato>-<bulb>, for all the friends who are lucky enough to get it.

Is it difficult to plant chrysanthemum? I want to plant one to observe the chrysanthemum in detail which I believe will be of great help in painting chrysanthemum.

That is what exactly her Gongbi style Chrysanthemum flower is about. No, it is not more difficult than free-hand style.

I didn't know we could just add the alum mixture to the colors!!! Just ordered several packets of each of the peach sap glue and the alum powder so I can use my raw papers more now! Love this effect!

Have you tried this with pure mineral pigments - as the Chinese colors can be hard to source?

That should work. I have tried with Chinese mineral pigments that we carry at our BHA site.
