This is my favourite ever mountain jacket with everything feature useable and I can’t fault it. I did like the whistle on the previous version but easy to clip one into the pocket. I’m just about to order another one after retiring my previous black one….. I haven’t found a better jacket since my previous purchase. The review was 100% accurate. Thanks for the hands-on review ! I’m just a bit worried that I could let rain into the tent by touching its uncovered bathtub end with my feet (I’m about 190cm). What do you think?
@trekitt2 күн бұрын
Whilst is it possible to let some condensation through by contacting the bathtub with your feet, you should be fine there. Ben is 191cm and has no issues fitting in the Dagger without touching the ends. Just be conscious of your position when you're getting ready to sleep and you'll be fine. Or be extra anti-social and sleep diagonally, taking up the entire two-man to yourself for a very comfortable night.

Word of warning to anyone thinking of buying this bag- there is an opening at the bottom that gives you access to the main compartment and it can’t be locked. The zips are too narrow to fit any kind of padlock, even a cable lock. Apart from that though it’s a great bag.

hey,I'm very curious about the differences between this and das parka.Can i get the answer?
@trekitt8 күн бұрын
Overall they are very similar jackets, using the same insulation, albeit in slightly different weights. The Generator Alpine does use a slightly burlier face fabric and also comes in a touch lighter (15g). The overall featureset is very similar too, the main differentiator is the hook and loop cuffs on the Generator vs the elastic cuffs on the Das Parka. For absolute warmth the Das does just take the podium, but the Generator has that durability edge. We think you'd be happy with whichever one you decided to pick.

Dude, thanks for 6:16 explaining the straps. The product listing didn't explain this, nor could salespeople at the trekking store I bought my second pair explain what they were for, so I simply took them off. I thought to myself, "I'm not going to accidentally drop these, and even if I ever do I can simply pick them up again and move on. What do I need these stupid straps for?" So I removed them. I'll have to see if I can find them again, and try out your method. I haven't experienced any tendonitis though, and I can say that using poles without the straps has improved my grip strength. And I also find not having them more convenient for when I want to use my hands for other things. Still, I'd like to give your method a try and look forward to doing that soon! Well done on the whole video, especially 1:54 explaining the benefits. My boss was making fun of me for my poles yesterday, asking if I had skied to work (but what if I had? That would also be cool...). I live in Finland, and thought that so-called "Nordic walking" was enough of a thing here that I wouldn't need to explain it to him. I recently walked the West Highland Way and now I'm hooked on poles, as I like how they incorporate my upper body, and also having the extra points of contact, especially with the ice around here this time of year.
@trekitt9 күн бұрын
Glad to hear you're getting on well with your poles. Let us know how you find using them with the straps (if you find them!), we think the straps are a useful addition, but your mileage may vary. Living in Finland we would expect you to be much more likely to have actually skied to work...

You could either retrace the laces down to the lower hooks to take up more lace, or gather the loops together and line them up along your shins and then fold the top of your socks over the laces, holding them in place and well out of the way. It's a common trick when mountaineering to avoid catching laces.

For side sleepers we'd recommend looking at the Nemo Disco (down) or the Nemo Forte (synthetic) ranges. Nemo design their bags with side sleepers in mind, opting for their "Spoon" shape as opposed to a more traditional mummy shape. They're much more comfortable for side sleepers.

Four things: One: I wish ME's sizing was more streamlined and consistent throughout their lines; Two: I wish they offered better, brighter colors in the Oreus; Three: I wish they offered the Oreus in belay-specific pants; and Four: I wish ME would publish the Aetherm gram-weight like they do with their other synthetic options.
@trekitt20 күн бұрын
All valid points. 1. Agreed, their sizing does vary across their range, although they're far from the only brand that do this! 2. Brighter colours are always a risk for brands, they tend to be less popular than the "safer" colours, and given the Oreus range is fairly small in production ME had to go for a safer colour option, but we would like to see some brighter colours too. 3. We would expect to see more variety in products using Aetherm moving forward. Whether thats a pair of Belay pants or not is to be seen. 4. We've asked, it does seem like an odd omission for them not to publish it. Would be very useful for comparison.

Thankyou for this. I remember Akela showing me (in 1963) a particular way of lacing shoes which made it easier to remove them in the event of my getting shrapnel wounds in the foot. I was always told that the best way to lace a boot is using the side to side , straight across method and not the criss cross method shown in video - the reason being that in the event of a serious foot injury then the laces can be cut up the middle and the boot removed far quicker by first aiders , emergency services etc.
@trekitt24 күн бұрын
Sound reasoning behind lacing straight across. The methods mentioned here are to help secure your foot and hopefully keep you comfortable and blister-free in your boots. If the straight across method works for you, go for it.

Great review. Lots of good usable info. Here is my two cents. The Oreus is very warm and lofty compared to how thin it is. And it can be compressed down to almost nothing. Not that I would ever do that. Compressing synthetic fibers really hard, is one of the fastest ways to kill those fibers, and thus ruining the insulation. I digress. The jacket feels very nice and soft. According to ME, the ME athletes that tested the Oreus jacket asked if it was a down jacket, and I can understand why. It has a very soft and down like feeling to it. And if it gets a little wet, it dries up very quickly. Personally I’m very pleased with it. It does fit a tiny bit on the snug side. But as I put my waterproof shell on top of my insulation, that’s completely fine. All in all, it’s a great addition to my quiver, and I can’t wait to try it out in the Norwegian winter 🇳🇴

Interesting bit of kit. Big question is how does this tech hold up to multiple wash cycles? It's not mentioned very often, but I find synthetic fill performance degrades more over time than down. My ME Superflux is nowhere near as warm as when it was new for example! Closing that gap could help justify the price.
@p.richter959226 күн бұрын
I guess it all depends on how much you use it, and how much you wash it, and so on. ME says that the R&D process of the Aetherm insulation has taken 5 years. And it’s made for fast and light high alpine missions, so it should hold up to that kind of use/abuse. However, synthetic materials will degrade over time. But that also depends on how you treat it. Synthetic insulation just like down will take a beating when compressed over time. So keep it in a non compressed state as much as possible (and perhaps don’t compress it as much as possible when heading out for new adventures). If down is compressed over time, all is not lost. You can still regain the loft of that down, not so much with synthetic. If treated properly, down will almost last forever, synthetic fibers won’t. Having said that, almost all of my puffy jackets are synthetic. So I have purchased the Oreus jacket, and I’m very happy with it. If it gets a little wet, it dries up very quickly, and it’s nice and warm. It feels very lofty compared to how thin it is, and it’s very comfortable to wear. Take care and stay safe. ATB from Norway 🇳🇴

How does this jacket compare to the ME lightline. In terms of warmth and durability. Great vid as always..
@trekitt27 күн бұрын
They are almost directly comparable in terms of warmth, if we're being very picky the Lightline contains 1g more down, but you wouldn't notice the difference there with such a small amount. The real difference is in the durability of the face fabrics, the Lightline bumps up to a 40D vs the 20D on the Axion, making the Lightline more durable and overall weather resistant, but slightly less packable. Unfortunately the Axion has been discontinued and it's closest replacement (that we stock), the Glaceon Pro has 30g less down in it so will be slightly less warm. Same goes for the Rab Ascent Down Jacket, which does jump the face fabric to 40D but still contains a little less down.
