Brother, I am no expert feathersticker, but from my personal use I have found the v -edge to be easier in terms of consistency and predictability. I have compared two knives witht the same degree angles of convex and v-edge, both profiled and sharpened by me, and while the convex did beautiful feather it seemed a bit harder to maintain the cutting edge being engaged with wood compared to the v-edge. And of course the convex will maintain a better edge in general due to the geometry. I also recognise this may be a matter of individual preference, or what you are more used to. I also noticed the Ka-Bar you are using is factory sharp, which is mediocer at best. Would be good to see you do a comparison of similar edge angles on the same knife (the cold steel master hunter for example, which you have two of), sharpened to a mirror edge. Great content, I subsscribed :) Cheers!

@wismods so 1 convex and one regular v grind comparison? Also thanks for the sub!
@wismods18 сағат бұрын
@shane4176 yes, a head to head between a convex edge vs a v-edge, both sharpened at 30-34 (15-17 degrees per side). And, if possible, it would be best to do this with two identical knives. Cheers!
@wismods21 сағат бұрын
you make very good points regarding the handle on the master hunter. You clearly understand knives well. The geometry is very good and much better than the Fallkniven, but I wish they had made it with a hard plastic underneath with a rubber overmold. I would have loved for it to have the hard plastic on the finger guard and pommel, that way you could put it to hard use without fearing to tear up the soft rubber. The finger guard is already tearing up from sliding the knife in and out of the sheath, so imagine scraping that portion against wood while batoning. Also, I have seen some cold steel rubber handles just comming off from the tang. They should reengineers their handles to something similar to the Hultafors OK4 knife, that is one of the most comfortable hadles I have used. I may still purchase the knife and do my own burlap micarta handle on it (similar to what I have done to a number of my knives), that should make a beautiful hard use bushcrafter. How do you feel aboutt he durability of the handle? Cheers!
@shane417621 сағат бұрын
@wismods thanks for watching and for the kind words. As far as the handle durability so far I've been very happy with it. I definitely agree the finger guard could possibly be a point of failure at some. Although so far for me I haven't had any issues. But I also am not using the knife day in and day out. It could eventually fail.

Gerber went down hill after fiskers. They have alot of big adds but. My old Gerbers much better than new. Evan the Fisker knives. Gerber/Fisker machete no distal taper no balance, vase shape handle requires a tight grip bad news if you work all day. The edge is a hallow ground bound for failure. I was given one the edge was a mess to much to grind, I had to straiten the edge with a couple of hammers. Caronas, Collins, Cold steel and others alot better.

For those interested, the Stihl branded axe is I believe actually a German made Adler 951600 spitting axe, 3000g of juicy Germanic goodness. I have three of them 🤭 Also, the Husqvarna axe is made by German firm Gardena, and can be purchased cheaper in the grey and turquoise regalia of the original Gardena 2800.

@richardbadish69902 ай бұрын
I hear you on not liking the round stihl handle. But to be fair, the rotation of the head upon contact. Is actually helping with the splitting action. If u allow the head to rotate. It helps kick the pieces away from one another. Maybe instead of fighting it, try allowing it to rotate. I think that might help u more, obviously if u are trying to force it not to rotate. It would definitely hurt the hands rather fast.. Just a thought..

So i dont know if its a plecebo or not, but sometimes on that really knotted stuff i will take a couple cracks at the knots with a regular chopping axe to just try and break up that kind of curl of knots running through it and it seems to split a bit better. Again it might just be in my head but worth a try if anyone gets really super stuck on a knotted piece

Hi. As someone who has used it for a long time, would you recommend this knife?
@shane41763 ай бұрын
I would say this. It really depends on what you intend on using the knife for. For a survival type knife that you intend on doing lots of chopping shelter building and batoning with I'd say yes! But if you were just looking for an overall Bushcraft knife I would not recommend it. It's too heavy and thick and tiresome to use for making notches and carving and cutting paracord and making fire. I think there are much better knives for the later.
@emrekale88273 ай бұрын
@@shane4176 thank you😊 Which knife would you recommend for around 300-400 dollars for buschcarft?
@shane41763 ай бұрын
@emrekale8827 I like my cold steel master hunter in 3v. Pretty inexpensive and it has a great handle. I convexed mine and its great. One of my favorite bushcraft knives is the gary wines bushcrafter made by LT Wright.
Hi , he really look like the cold steel recon scout but with a convexe grind . Gorgeous blade !
@RobCardosi-sf4nc3 ай бұрын
Coldsteel has some of the most comfortable handles. I took a file to the spine of my MH CPM-3V(now it looks like shit but works phenomenally), incidentally my MH VG1 comes with a fairly sharp spine from the factory. I also ordered a second one from ebay last month. It was selfor $89 OBO. So I offered $55, and they sold it immediately. Got it a month later for $58 w/tax. Only after the sale I find out the seller's in Singapore. My alarm starts ringing. A month later today, it arrives and the mailing label says its from Hong Effn China Kong! Now I am certain I got shit on. I opened the package to pull out the coldsteel box, there's a white label on it says its made in CHINA!!!! The label also has more Chinese distribution centers in china and other stupid chinese districts of manufacturing and source materials. I am pissed! I opened the box and unlike my 25 other coldsteels from the MH to M Tanto to my 2 Trail Master 3V, the knife was sheathedand together wrapped in bubble wrap and the knife actually in cellophane and placed in the sheath. What other signs this was a counterfeit; it was stone washed but had machine marks on each side by the gaurd, the fake kray-ex has micro sandy texture and there is a manufacturing line on the top of the handle going around and down back towards the front to the gaurds as if molded from two halves and joined. The lettering was almost perfect except for the "s" and the "r" were thinner in a different script almost. The edge was fair decent except at the last 2/3 cm where I can run my finger with pressure without any worries. On both my san mai and 3V master hunter, you would hit bone if you were dumb enough to try that. Yeah, I got screwed. I tried to contact Ebay but you have to initiate Ebay's return system for 3 days before they allow you to call them. So I started the return with loads of pictures and a scathing complaint. After an hour rechecked my complaints and apparently someone saw it. They said I should receive a refund in 2 to 3 days and don't bother sending the Chinese crap back to them! Yup, so be careful boys!
@shane41763 ай бұрын
Yeah that sucks man! Ebay can be super sketchy buying certain products knives being 1. I buy from reputable dealers and wait for sales. But so far I'm super happy with the cold steel fixed blades. Still loving my 3v
@RobCardosi-sf4nc3 ай бұрын
@shane4176, yeah man, I read all the Chinese sellers reviews and there's a bunch of knuckleheads raving about how great their Master Hunter is from this seller not realizing that they got hosed with cheap Chinese counterfeit and there's no telling what cheap metal their fake MH CPM-3V is made of! I only knew because I have 2 Master Hunters in my hand and one is the stone washed 3V. I will write a review after I get my refund, hopefully they will see it.
