How are you now? How is everything in the medical path?

Hello, I am 44 years old and also father of three kids. I started the medical school this year. I have just finished the first semester with high scores. I have a master degree in social science but going to medical school was always my a dream for me!

What did your “typical” week look like each year of med school? I’m trying to wrap my head around if it truly makes sense for me to go to med school with two little kids!

I'm so glad I came across your videos! I am a mom with kids around the same age as your daughter and I will be starting med school in 2 years. This was so helpful! Also, can you share your thoughts on NYC as a place for raising a kid while pursuing a career in medicine?

Hi! Congrats on getting that far! I’m a 38 year old mum of 3, in my 2nd year of med school in the UK. I’m the only one with kids in my year. So sometimes it’s a bit lonely and I wonder if I’m crazy, so I searched on KZbin for reassurance and found you. I feel better now, if you can do it maybe I can too. Would love an update on how you’re doing now

Congratulations on 4th year! I had the same problem during the pandemic. All the kids were virtual schooled last year. It was so frustrating and challening to study for level 2 and then start rotations and have to be in charge of their schooling at the same time. I'm glad I wasn't alone in the journey. Can't wait to match this march too and move on.

Hi! I’m also a first year osteopathic medical student. I have no kids yet, but I would like to start a family soon. I was curious, how do moms in medical school afford having a baby during school? My boyfriend is also in medical training. Thank you! ❤️
@StudentDoctorMom2 жыл бұрын
Hi Victoria! Congratulations on medical school! I honestly think it depends a lot on where you are located for medical school as well as what support system you have. If you have extended family or parents who can babysit then you can save a lot of money in childcare. Otherwise in NYC, having a nanny is very common but was out of our budget. I am lucky enough to have a fiance who works so I can count on some of his income in addition to my student loans. If your partner is also in medical school it's likely that you both might need to take out student loans to help with living and childcare costs but it's definitely possible. One of my best friends had a baby in 3rd/4th year of medical school- so it's doable. You know... It's never a good time to start a family so I'd say let life happen and you will find a way to make it work! I wish I had another kid either 1st or 2nd year of medical school, because 3rd and 4th year are more challenging logistically with needing to go into rotations and likely not being able to have sick days. That being said it's such an individual decision! I wish you the very best! 🙏😃

I don’t know if this will get seen since this is an older video. But I’m a Dad. 5 yo and 15 month old. I really wanna go for medical school but my wife is a SAHM so even if she works, thinking about finances stresses me out.
@StudentDoctorMom4 жыл бұрын
Hello Dillon! Yeah I totally can understand the concern... It's definitely doable depending on where you go to school, where you live (cost of living) and if you are willing to take out loans your school offers (most likely the max amount).... I can tell you that I go to school with several dad's and even some who just had new babies born in their 2nd (or first) year! If there is a will, there is a way... But it's definitely a very personal and circumstantial decision that should be considered carefully. There are a lot of sacrifices that you will make and a lot of sacrifices that your family and kids will make as well... There really isn't avoiding that. But it is definitely possible to do! I will be sending my thoughts your way and wish you the best of luck! Thank you for the comment!

So grateful to have come across this video and your channel. I have a 19 month old and I’m about to enter my fourth semester of nursing school. I have always dreamt of becoming an MD, but felt as though that wasn’t attainable after having my little boy, so I decided to become a nurse-easier to get accepted and a better income than a PCA. All I have thought about since starting nursing school was how badly I felt called to medicine-I know I will not feel complete if I never pursue it. I haven’t come across another story similar to mine until now. You are my new inspiration for when I graduate nursing school to keep pushing and make it into medicine. :)

Thanks so much for the comment Brittney! Even though we have different struggles compared to other students, we can still succeed, we just have to do a bit more work... Which can be discouraging at time but I know my kiddo makes me stronger than I was before. More driven! I'm sending good vibes your way!
