Thank you so much @Nairobi Alvarez! It really surprised me how many students at my school were nontraditional, with other careers and children, and etc who are older than the typical traditional student. I believe each student can bring a very unique skillset and something extra special that helps everyone in the class in ways we didn't realize. The life experience will be an asset in many ways! I wish you the best in your path to medicine! You can do it! You are never too younger to recreate yourself!

How are you doing now ? Did you finish ?? I’m in a similar situation. I’m a mom of a 5 year old boy. Every time I go to the hospital and see doctors I feel a tug on my heart. I would love to but I don’t want to take time away from my child. But I see sooo many moms do it. Did you see other moms in your class as well? How did you balance study time ? Sorry for the questions lol

Thanks so much for the comment Brittney! Even though we have different struggles compared to other students, we can still succeed, we just have to do a bit more work... Which can be discouraging at time but I know my kiddo makes me stronger than I was before. More driven! I'm sending good vibes your way!

@@StudentDoctorMom I didnt do as well as I'd liked but I wasn't able to start for an hour and a half after the start time. There was an issue with the pearson center verifying my accommodations even though I had the AMCAS approval with me. So, the day was even more stressful but I got through. Applying now and focusing on osteopathic as my stats are better suited to that. I'm hopeful and am working really hard on other aspects of my application.

I love you and your message so much! You are living proof that not everyone’s path to medical school is linear and “perfect.” I’m currently taking a gap year and applying to osteopathic medical schools in June . My husband (a current 2nd year medical student) and I just got married six months ago right after I graduated, and I have been VERY conflicted and confused about how to balance having a family and also attending medical school from a female perspective. I am so excited to see you grow and achieve your goals this year! Sending so much love your way!❤️❤️❤️

@StudentDoctorMom

Hello Dillon! Yeah I totally can understand the concern... It's definitely doable depending on where you go to school, where you live (cost of living) and if you are willing to take out loans your school offers (most likely the max amount).... I can tell you that I go to school with several dad's and even some who just had new babies born in their 2nd (or first) year! If there is a will, there is a way... But it's definitely a very personal and circumstantial decision that should be considered carefully. There are a lot of sacrifices that you will make and a lot of sacrifices that your family and kids will make as well... There really isn't avoiding that. But it is definitely possible to do! I will be sending my thoughts your way and wish you the best of luck! Thank you for the comment!

The sad part is you never go back to learn what you were supposed to learn in class bec you have more new stuff to learn and it comes back to bite you when you are studying for step 1. I have those regrets but that’s the only way to manage and keep moving forward.

Yes! NY is great for school. Lots of public transportation! Depending on where you attend school it can become very expensive. And if you have a family that can also make it hard as a student because you don't have an income. Other than the difficulty of finding a place to live, it's great. There is so much to do... You will spend years exploring and trying new things! Which is nice when all you do otherwise is study. :-) good luck!!

So grateful to have come across this video and your channel. I have a 19 month old and I’m about to enter my fourth semester of nursing school. I have always dreamt of becoming an MD, but felt as though that wasn’t attainable after having my little boy, so I decided to become a nurse-easier to get accepted and a better income than a PCA. All I have thought about since starting nursing school was how badly I felt called to medicine-I know I will not feel complete if I never pursue it. I haven’t come across another story similar to mine until now. You are my new inspiration for when I graduate nursing school to keep pushing and make it into medicine. :)

Hi! I’m also a first year osteopathic medical student. I have no kids yet, but I would like to start a family soon. I was curious, how do moms in medical school afford having a baby during school? My boyfriend is also in medical training. Thank you! ❤️
@StudentDoctorMom
@StudentDoctorMom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Victoria! Congratulations on medical school! I honestly think it depends a lot on where you are located for medical school as well as what support system you have. If you have extended family or parents who can babysit then you can save a lot of money in childcare. Otherwise in NYC, having a nanny is very common but was out of our budget. I am lucky enough to have a fiance who works so I can count on some of his income in addition to my student loans. If your partner is also in medical school it's likely that you both might need to take out student loans to help with living and childcare costs but it's definitely possible. One of my best friends had a baby in 3rd/4th year of medical school- so it's doable. You know... It's never a good time to start a family so I'd say let life happen and you will find a way to make it work! I wish I had another kid either 1st or 2nd year of medical school, because 3rd and 4th year are more challenging logistically with needing to go into rotations and likely not being able to have sick days. That being said it's such an individual decision! I wish you the very best! 🙏😃

Me and my girlfriend (we’re a same sex couple ) wanna have kids. We’re 23 and 21. I wanna do medicine so bad, it’s something I can’t just stop thinking about. It’s been already 4 years I’m out of high school. I’m unhappy job-wise, and I regret every day not taking the test (we have it in Italy to get in med school) years ago. But I also feel the need to be a mom... I am afraid my girl and my future child will think I am a bad selfish mother...... but I can’t see myself being happy with a normal job.

I definitely can understand the struggle to decide. I recall someone asking me, "why not? You are never too old to reinvent yourself!" I have learned that there is rarely a "perfect time" to have kids. Actually, one of my professors who is a doctor, had all her kids during medical school and she said it was the best time, because if not then, then when? My path was a bit different than most. You have to do what is best for you and your specific situation. In my case, I knew I would always regret not trying... I am so happy I did. My daughter is actually very supportive as well. It's so motivating to know that she is proud of me. Many of the parents at my school have more than one kid and a few are still babies! It's possible, but you definitely need a good support system (and your classmates also become a part of that). Thanks for your comments, I wish you and your girlfriend the best of luck in whatever the future holds for you. :-)

StudentDoctorMom oh gosh.. I admire you so much!!! Thank you for these kind words... you’re right, you can’t put a stop to your life. It’s our right to want to be moms, if you know what I mean. It is everything but fair to have to split between career and motherhood... it takes a village and it’s true, but thank you for showing me that it is indeed possible to be a mom and a future doctor... my dream is to help women get pregnant and to make families who struggle realize their dream and get an addition to their families. There’s no greater gift than a child...
