Hi Sandra in this video (5mins 20secs in,) you say that you normally drape a towel around you to soak up all of the excess water that splashes onto you when using the big grinder. I don’t know if you still use this machine, but if you do, why not simply fix a small sheet of stout polythene (or aluminium,) to the end of the top cover/guard such that it points down and redirects the water that gets thrown off the wheel? The water can then drip off that. If you look at the video you can clearly see that most of the water gets thrown off the end of the top guard by the draft from the wheel, and directly off the wheel itself at the ten o’clock position. It looks like you mainly use the lower half of the wheel so an extended guard wouldn’t restrict visibility or have any safety issues. Don’t be tempted to try using any thin polythene as this could get drawn in towards the wheel and stick to it which will make you jump if it gets ripped off and spun around! Kind regards . . . Andy

@@sandramcewen Hi, OK not giving up, but boy, you set the bar pretty high!! This is a fabulous piece, well done Sandra!! I've fired one pendant more than 30 times, truly!! I've been chasing bubbles and tiny particles of the wrong enamel. I've been amazed at just how much you can grind away and the number of times I can re-fire a piece. Everything looks acceptable until I get it under the microscope. What would you think your record is for re-fires chasing errors?? Kind regards . . . Andy

@@AndyDaviesByTheSea If you are getting a lot of bubbles in your enamel, you maybe over-firing or firing too hot. I like to slightly underfire everthing until the end... :)
@AndyDaviesByTheSea20 күн бұрын
@@sandramcewen Thanks Sandra, I was thinking that I'm either adding too much enamel (and air) at a time, and I also thought that repeatedly under-firing would simply trap a whole lot more air bubbles than seeing them off a little at a time, but what do I know? There's no question that you are surely a very talented expert enameller. Thanks for the response, I know how long it all takes. Kind regards . . . . Andy

Isn’t it a big risk of hurtig your fingers when grinding?

When I first started out, I'd attach things to dopping sticks with wax. But it was such a hassle, I just eventually got good at just doing it with my fingers. :P

I see that people drop of from video to video, and here me thinking it get more and more interesting. This is so good. But as I see they returen for the last one it seems like people want to see the stuff that other channels doesn’t show, and skip the putting in the colors part of this project.
@ingegerdandersson6963Ай бұрын
I must say that normaly it is Netflix or something like that that get me to marathon watch. But now I am watching your project from start to finish. At first I thought that you could have edidted it but now I realy like that you didn’t. If I think something take too long I put the speed at 2x until a you do the next thing. You give me the opportunity to decide what I need to see in detail and to skim past what I don’t want to watch in detail. The best thing is that you show how to make the silver piece, how to prepare the enamel, how to finish the piece (havn’t goten that far yet though). Others often only show how you put down the different colors. ❤

Couldn’t you use a bigger bowl and a connonball, round stone or something like that? Where I live they do that when making there own mustard instead of the kind you using here.

Thank you for your videos, as well as the beauty you make! I have a few questions. 1. What thickness of metal do you use? 2. Is it possible to solder copper or 925 sterling silver with copper acetate? 3. why do you use silver foil, because you already have the product itself made of pure silver and the enamel will fit well? Thanks for the answers.
@sandramcewenАй бұрын
I use 20 gauge fine silver, which is. .8mm thick. I haven't tried fusing copper or sterling, but I bet it's much harder. I'd suggest just sweat soldering them. Eutectic solder would be best, but hard solder would work just fine too. The foil just makes it extra sparkly, so it's just a personal preference. You can totally skip it... Good luck! :)

I think propane is even worse inside as the gas is heavier than air and pools close to the floor, while acetylene is lighter and might escape... Hmmm I have one under my desk that keeps me up at night
@sandramcewenАй бұрын
I agree. I keep the bottles of propane outside when I'm not using them. But, yes, they are tiny bottles for sure!

😮 😮Nice video _how to do- welding.
@sandramcewenАй бұрын
The hose isn't long enough to keep the propane on the floor. But I will take it under advisement and move it farther away from the soldering station. Thanks for the heads up! :)

Hi Sandra thanks for this. I stumbled on on your live stream last night and only got partway through watching before we had to go out for a fireworks party and meal with friends, (I'm in the UK so quite a few hours ahead of you.) It was too late to look in again when we got home, but I was up at 4:00 am catching up with you. Sandra, if you think you'll have more time when you retire, forget it!! I'm 74 now and have been retired for 18 years ago and I never, ever, have enough hours in the day. If you design and make things, every day is full and exciting and far too short!! Thanks again for sharing your knowhow lets hope that it stays on KZbin for hundreds of years to remind folks that you can actually make beautiful things yourself, it just takes time, practiced skill and knowhow. Kind regards . . . Andy

I have 2 paragon kiln for glass fusing. A 6 foot by 3 foot coffin kiln and a 16 x 16 box kiln, top opening. I used the 16 " when I started enameling. It took about 3 hours to heat it to 1450. I found a studio kiln on Craigslist for 300.00 brand new! It has a dial controller and med. Is 1500. It heats up in about a half an hour. Im going to replace the dial with a digital controller. Kilns are a simple appliance but the thermostat needs to be able to reach the high temperatures without blowing out. Paragon just got outed for sloppy customer service. I call a local guy who services my kilns. We rewired my large kiln, even though it is a paragon on the outside, it was rewired on the inside!
@sandramcewenАй бұрын
You are so right. They really are just a box with a heating element. As soon as things slow down around here, I do plan on trying my hand at fixing one of the Paragons. With two kilns worth of parts, I figure I can hobble together one working one?

I have so many types of enamel paints, ceramic types, sunshine, two types of Thompsons ..... of course I bought almost every color... so I have invested a lot of $$$$$....not happy yet. Thank you for sharing your techniques, if you only use sterling silver for the whole design (I just do champleve so no wires but all engraved) How would you remove the heat tarnishing on the silver after the final fire polish with out ruining the polish on the enamel ? Maybe just the pink polishing paper? But there be no way of avoiding the enamel with this :/ many thanks !! Also do you ever find the barrel polisher chips the enamel ? I’m scared to put mine in 🤣
@sandramcewen2 ай бұрын
After fire polishing, I usually go back and do some finer polishing to smooth it out. Start with a 30 micron, then 15, then 9. Follow that with a cerium or fine pumice. It'll polish up the glass as well. If you don't want to do all that, just mask up the glass and use your regular silver polishing regimen. Good luck!

I wanted to try out a Prometheus Kiln, but the only one I could find here in the states was super tiny. I've heard they are very good. I haven't heard that the kiln shelf needs to be on stilts. Maybe talk to the maker of the kiln and see what they recommend for that. :)
