No, I don't think I'll give you my email address to be sucked into your sales funnel. Goddamn, are there any musician remaining, or is everything just a grift to sell a course or harvest emails. Also, I watched with AdBlock.
@holosuitemasteringКүн бұрын
Suit yourself. I spend a lot of time making these videos and resources as clear and easy to understand and use as possible. I don't think an email address is much to ask in return. Anyone can freely unsubscribe whenever they want. Or they can choose, as you have, not to partake of those resources at all. It's hard to make money as a musician. I don't think we as a community have anything to gain by shooting each other down. Yeah we gotta do some stuff that ain't great (I mean who really wants to make music for sync licensing?), but for some of us music is the thing we know how to do best, and things like sales funnels offer us the opportunity to make enough money to survive. I'm not hoping to become a millionaire, I'd just like to be able to pay my bills, feed my family and work a job I actually like. And help people in the process. The difference between a grift and a business is whether the seller cares about the outcomes the customers have. I hope I've shown through my content that I'm most interested in helping people, and the fact that I'm able to make some money out of doing what I love is a blessing. Yeah I'd love to make an online course someday, but only to distill what I'm teaching here - the kinds of things that take years of grinding and trial and error to learn. If I can help some people short-cut that in exchange for money, I think those people might feel like they've gotten their money's worth. And anyone who doesn't think I'm teaching something useful can just move on. Similarly, a sales funnel can be used for good or for evil - it all depends on how much the seller gives a sh*t. It's simply a way of inviting people to learn about a product or service you have, and help the prospective customer make a decision about whether they'd like to purchase. It can be full of BS or it can offer something useful. I haven't met KZbin's requirements to monetize this channel as of the time I'm writing this, so it makes no difference to me whether you watch with adblock or not. I don't think I'll ever make enough off ads to make a dent in my rent anyway, it'll just be the kind of thing I can put towards hiring an editor or something else to make my vids better quality for my viewers.

One of the things I hate the most is when people use a mono switch to remove width from bass. From what I understand, this doesn't fix ANY phase issues, it merely bakes them right into the music. While that does make it easier for limiters and MB comps to level out the volume in those cases, it doesn't really remove phasing issues from a wide reese bass or so. I feel like that deserves a video from someone who knows more about it!
@holosuitemastering12 күн бұрын
Interesting, this is something I've not thought about in detail - but certainly on paper it makes sense. Collapsing a stereo track to mono _should_ make any phase issues permanent. It does make me wonder whether the mono buttons on plugins such as Ableton's utility compensate for that - seems like they should, but I've never actually tested it out! I shall tinker around in the studio and see what I can put together 😊
@timmarcusmoore8 күн бұрын
One argument is that if you bake it in and still get things sounding the way you want, at least you won't get any surprises when played back on different systems. I just did some testing with the Ableton Utility plugin, and it doesn't seem to do anything surprising. It does in fact bake in the phase cancellation when you use the Mono or Bass Mono buttons. You can try it yourself by putting an Operator with a 100 Hz sawtooth drone through Utility, then hit the phase invert switch on one channel so you get perfect cancellation. If you listen through headphones, you can still hear it, but if you put a Spectrum after in L+R mode, you won't see any signal. Then hit the Bass Mono switch in the Utility and the fundamental just disappears.
@holosuitemastering8 күн бұрын
@timmarcusmoore nice one! I did fudge around with a few Reese bass samples and Utility in Ableton the other day, and while they did end up with some volume dips where phasing occurred, it was much of a muchness really. What I found more interesting was listening to what happens when you compare a wide phasey stereo reverb vs that same reverb narrowed vs two mono versions of the same reverb vs two stereo versions of the same reverb that have been mono'd using Utility - each sounds subtly different. Still deciding whether it's interesting enough to turn into a video. What do you think?

That's something I haven't run into before! I assume this is for a stereo instrument? I guess the easiest way to fix it would be to run two versions of the same instrument, both in mono with slightly different PWM speeds, and pan them left and right - that way they would have a lower chance of lining up and causing cancellation (and on paper it shouldn't sound that much different from the stereo).

This is a question I have asked myself for years! Especially when it comes to pads. I think it's somebody's own fault if they listen ambient on mono devices. I mean: Who does this? Anyways, I'd say the struggle with mono compatibility is my critical enemy still, although I already to all the things you talk about.
@holosuitemastering14 күн бұрын
I was watching a Dan Worrall video the other day, and he reminded me that a lot of Bluetooth speakers are in mono - so I wouldn't be surprised if some people are listening to ambient without realising it's in mono! Plus anyone listening on any speaker setup where they're not perfectly in the middle is not really listening in stereo 🤔 Now that I am monitoring my phase regularly when making music, I haven't had any issues - except when I've been going back trying to remaster my old tracks, ouch 😅

@@holosuitemastering Yes, I hear you. True that. Over the years I have just destroyed so many pads by making them mono'ish. I try to save some money so that I can get one of your feedback offerings. Maybe we know more afterwards, haha. Thanks for the cool ambient content by the way. See you!

Boards of canada beats have a hip hop influence imo, also trip hop in general is more atmospheric. Anyway, I've been following your content and it's suuuuper useful. THIS is the channel I've been looking for for so much time. I think an interesting topic you could speak about is reverb in ambient music. The advice I've seen online is to not overdo reverb (just apply the right amount between 10% - 15%) but what about in the context of ambient and drone music? not reverb creates more lush sounds but too much can get the mix muddy. How do you deal with it in this context?
@holosuitemasteringАй бұрын
Trip Hop definitely came to mind, but my first thought was "seeing as it has its own classification, I guess it technically doesn't count" 😋 I've done this video on reverb, which hopefully might be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3qacqaaaM59eqssi=gyv8AWVYHId5MOrR I try not to be prescriptive with reverb for ambient because it's basically the whole sound for some artists - I'd rather just show some techniques for how to get around muddiness without having to dial it back too much 🙂

I am at a stage where I have put some albums on Bandcamp and I am now thinking of signing up to cdbaby to distribute to other platforms (not that this means I would get any listens) but I would love to get heard by more people. I follow and purchase from various small labels that output similar music to my efforts. If I wanted to reach out to them, do you suggest holding back a new album/EP and creating a soundcloud playlist to send to them?
@lordweevilАй бұрын
Just discovered you a few days ago and going through your contect... Another great video here where you touched on something important that resonated with me (pun intended!). You mentioned that you master for 'typical' listeners (ear-buds, average stereo system etc). I am lucky enough to have a decent Marantz amp and Q Acoustic speakers for home listening, but I mix using a pair of DT990 headphones with some use of a pair of fairly basic Mackey monitors in an untreated room. My process... After I've finished a mix, I export it then wait several hours or even days, before listening to it on my hi-fi. By this time I've listened to other music to cleanse my ears of my own. I then make notes on things that might need changing and then go back to the mix and make any adjustments. Often it's subtle changes to EQ on the master chanel, possibly level changes on an individual track, and sometimes even some musical/note/timing changes. Hence my mixing and 'mastering' get fudged together, but hopefully and I end up with 'finished' tracks that sound good on my decent system, and hopefully reasonable on something more basic. ...Or I get so fed up with it I settle on something and move on to another idea! I supose the answer is "get someone else to master it!"?!
@holosuitemasteringАй бұрын
Thanks for watching! That sounds like a good way to do things - whatever works for you really! It's not necessarily a bad thing to mix and master at the same time, though if you get stuck tweaking it might be a sign that you need to try and keep them separate. If you're struggling with objectivity, of course it's always helpful to get another set of ears on it 😉

PRO! Thanks so much for your uploads - as an ambient/drone 'producer' (don't like that word!) it's difficult to watch most 'mastering and mixing' how-to's as so many of the techniques and tips don't transfer well to ambient music. Question... There must be times when you wish you could get your hands on the mixed project, or stems to fix issues... Do you get sent 'finished' mixes to master that you send back as there are issues in the mix?
@holosuitemasteringАй бұрын
Yay, another winner! Thanks for watching! It really depends on the project - I will always work with the artist to help them fix the issues in their mixes first, but if they are lacking in the knowledge or resources to do it themselves, I'll offer to stem master if it's in their budget. If neither of those are an option (e.g for artists who recorded everything down to stereo from hardware and don't have multitracks), sometimes I can pull off some pretty amazing stuff at my end - Izotope Ozone and RX are indispensable for that. And sometimes we just have to accept some compromises...

I often get questions from clients about this, so I thought it was worth addressing 😉

I don't have to use it a lot, though I do occasionally use the EQ match function to help with unmasking - Dan Worrall did an amazing tutorial where he pointed out if you use sidechain to analyze the frequency of a track that's partially masking another one, Q3 will create a profile that tries to mimick it - but if you invert the EQ choices it makes, it also works as a handy way to see where the masking is happening and makes it easy to EQ cos the points have already been made for you. Very cool trick! Annoyingly, I can't find the dang link for you 😅 Dynamic EQ is also fun!
