A lot of positive comments from beginners here. Sorry to rain on the parade. The beauty of the Kratky method is that you set it and forget it. That means to start off with enough nutrient solution capacity to allow plants to grow to maturity. Lettuce, depending on the type, takes 3 to 6 liters (quarts) of nutrient solution to do that. This person with their coke cans, milk cartons, mason jars and other tiny containers will be working their butts off refilling the containers. Those styrofoam coolers are a good option because they are deep enough to hold a lot of the nutrient solution and feed a few plants out. I use 13 liter containers that holds 10 liters, because I want the nutrient level just above the bottom of my netcup when I set it. That is enough to see 3 netcups with 3 seeds each to the end for my cut and come again lettuce, although I do not cut, I pick the outer leaves. Other plants take more water nutrient solution for their life. To me, a tomato or cucumber is just not practical with the Kratky method. They are thirsty plants and live a long time, so other methods of hydroponics are more practical. I am using autopots for tomatoes. I also recommend a video from mhpgardener to see his dutch bucket setup.

Any root holding medium such as soil, sand, perlite, sponge, and etc is just a plant support, the key is plants access to nutrient that's why hydroponics is like giving plants an IV treatment of nutrients they don't have fight for their food so there's less energy for faster growth or production. I do hydroponics all of the time and friends are amazed how fast they grow.

Thanks for your videos. I never thought to grow Kratky outside but it looks very simple I will do it this years. It is so hot where I live. This seems like the almost no work should work. Thanks so much this is amazing

What is your growing zone? Leaving out in zone 5/6 over winter wouldnt have the nice green growth. It would be dead.

It’s a very cool full build video. Split screens & fast forward are entertaining, but difficult, (for me at least), to follow. My learning style benefits from verbal instructions & normal speed pace. That said, if watch a few times, think I could get it. Best design I’ve seen for aeroponic tower. No electricity on my site, so likely sticking to the kratky bucket tower, which is totally awesome as well. Looking at doing it in pretty pots with wood circles for lid/bases. If had electricity, this tower build would be great. Put on a planter caddy to rotate for sun. Really great project. 👍👍👍

Thank you for sharing this excellent video! It's a fantastic approach to reusing resources and making our plants more sustainable. I have a question, as I’m just starting out in this area: do you need to periodically review the solution to ensure the water contains all the nutrients necessary for the plants to grow?

I'm new to learning about hydroponics. Doesn't the rain dilute the solution? Do you have an overflow hole in case there's too much rain?

How do you not have the calcium nitrate and magnesium sulfate react to form calcium sulfate? Doesn't it just precipitate out and cancel the fertilizing effects?
