I'm 54 I have a 73 C10 square body stepside short bed I’v had for over 25 years. I’v taken it all apart twice now. The stepside has been a joy of excitement over the years, what I will say once you get the bug the amount of money one can put into a classic Truck is ridiculous. Me, I have over $20,000 & put another five grand into in the last two years. Love is a Hell of a drug!

I had an i.h. scout It only sat 6 months with no air cleaner.. moisture seized the #2 piston due to it having stock aluminum rings. The dissimilar metals had fused. With only 48k miles. The other cylinders still had the honing pattern. Had to resleave #2.. 266v8.

Back in the mid 70's I worked at a large junkyard' the owner had literally hundreds of motors sitting under sheds' he kept them up on pallets: he always made put the breather covers back on the carburetors and block off anyt entrances that rats/wasps etc could get into. He would have us write down the mileage on every motor and tag them along with information about the motors to his knowledge. One of my jobs' every Friday morning he would have me take a breaker bar and a box full of sockets and walk through the sheds and turn the motors over to keep them from sticking' he was up in his 80's at that time and had been in business 40 years before I'd worked for him' he would sit on his tractor while I walked through the sheds turning motors and watch' Make sure you turn them over a couple of good rounds he would say. Out of the 4 years I worked for him' he never had a motor to come back and I'd never heard/tell of anyone saying he sold them a bad motor and that he would always tell them upfront if anything was wrong with them. I'd asked him one time if he would let us pressure wash down under the hoods of the vehicles we scrapped so it would make it easier on us/stay clean' he said no he wanted his customers to see how the motors looked like the last time they were ran... same oil/ if they leaked oil/shape the gaskets were in etc. He had the best prices and customers would come from out of states to deal with him. He treated me like his own son and I learned a lot from him. RIP my buddy ' Bud.

Agreed however i see many of these "car revival" guys do it though! If they've been sitting more than a couple years i myself like to squirt some fogging oil into the cylinders before i do anything else and just let that marinate for a bit. Then turn engine over by hand and listen for ,well anything.

Yessir, people dont consider all thats involved in that swap. You have to have some kind of ignition/computer to run an Ls, you have to get new header's, new oil pan, motor mounts, radiator and the list goes on! An old school sbc needs 1 live wire to run, thats it! I like Ls engines, the power they're capable of is very impressive, but very expensive to do it right! I just took a 1984 350 out of a little motor home, had 31,000 miles on it, so i didn't touch the bottom end but put on some Pro-Filer 195cc head's with 64cc chambers, threw in a decent flat tappet cam, Brodix HP-1 intake, Quick Fuel HR750, and it dyno'd at 412hp@ 5900 rpm's and 402 ftlbs of torque @ 3900 rpm's! We put it in my son's Monza and its a hoot to drive! It'll make ya giggle! (Edit) In case anyone is wondering the cam i used was a Comp XE 274 which is 490/490 lift, duration @.050 is 232/236 on a 110 lsa. Installed spring height is 1.700 inch i think, don't hold me to that height but i think that was it.✌🏻

What about measuring installed height on the springs? Whoops. Also dont need those little seals at the top of the valves if you have good valve seals, i never use them anyway. Also those were good head's, 50yrs ago, should have advised newbies that if you cannot afford a decent set of aluminum head's and you gotta run stock stuff then Vortec heads are the very best factory small block chevy heads there are! You can usually find a set fairly cheap if not free from a friend or?? Yeah ya gotta use a different intake but definitely worth it! But cool video, hope the youngens learn something! ✌🏻

I agree with you UB. In my opinion, the only justification for keeping a patina finish is when you find a classic vehicle that has never been modified. Example: if you discover a ‘63 split window Corvette in a barn with 20,000 miles showing. In that case, tow the car on a flatbed into safe storage and don’t even wash it! Otherwise, a “patina” is just a case of taking the easy way out. -CF

I favor the older SBC for 3 main reasons: 1.) 5 head bolts with 1 shared, vs. 4 head bolts with 2 shared. 2.) your can replace lifters on SBC without pulling heads, even aftermarket hydraulic roller lifters with tie bar. 3.) SBC you can prime oil with a drill, without starting engine. LS has a stronger block, but unless you’re running twin hair dryers, you don’t need it.😊
