I don't think he was just talking about episode 3 in particular. I think he was talking about doing the episodic model in general. HL2 was a huge leap forward for its time. When the orange box came out, the games in it weren't as much of a graphical leap as gabe would have liked them to be compared to hl2. When valve scrapped it, you could see it better with portal 2 and csgo.
