2:48 fun fact! If you look under the headcrab’s front legs, you’ll see two flaps of skin with three dots on each. Those are actually their eyes! I’ve heard the reason they were removed in later iterations is because the eyes made them look a bit too cute. I like to think they were removed by evolution since they used their eyes to not jump off into the void in Xen, but since falling is mostly a non issue on Earth, they didn’t need those eyes anymore!

They don’t have eyes in hl2 because the head crabs in hl2 are combine modified that’s also why there’s no poison head crabs or fast head crabs in hl1 while the ones that are from hl1 are straight from xen that’s why head crab pods are in hl2 the combine sent em to kill towns like ravenholm

Just because its slightly related im gonna go on a tangent about gonomes. As you all know gonomes are enemies exclusive to opposing force. they are heavily mutated versions of headcrab zombies. One of the main resons people bring up why opposing force isn't cannon is because they never appear in the series again. But people forget that the combine could have easily modified the headcrabs to not cause gonomes to be created. And if the combine can wipe out billions of people in seven hours they can wipe out millions of zombies. The combine modifying headcrabs could also explain the differences in the first and second games. In the first game headcrabs die in toxic goo and survive in water. They also have a different underside, being filled in with seemingly organs possibly related to taking over humans. In hl2 survive in toxic goo and drown in water. They also have a hollow underside and many differences like a rougher top than the hl1 headcrab that has a very smooth top.

One of the reasons Half-Life storytelling is compelling is because it leaves so much unsaid and left up to interpretation. With Gonomes, it’s far more interesting to think “why don’t these appear outside Black Mesa?” and theorise reasons within what we know about the story, rather than to blandly going to “must be non-canon.” The same can be applied to all other aspects of Half-Life 1 and expansions (houndeyes, Race-X, etc).
