Sensational double. episode in an unparalleled series. However, while I am sure that many will disagree, I was disappointed with the ending (of the battle, not the episode). Everything about this episode was so real and scintillating, but the unrealistic ending broke the whole spellbinding mood. First of all, if the situation was so bad that the high command sent an entire whole patrol through heavy Kraut territory to warn the major outpost to withdraw, why would they suddenly decide to counterattack, and have enough success to break through in 24 hours and surround them? And given how insanely the German army adapted Hitler's fight to the death, it is doubtful that even at that stage, a 100-member unit would surrender to an outpost held by about 25 men. But everything else was fantastic and riveting, including the final 5 or so minutes after the surrender.

This was the most intense combat show. Trying to get that paratrooper not to move or talk was so scary. But sgt. Saunders having the brilliant idea to dress as a German to rescue the airman was fantastic! Such a thrilling and great show! It’s funny but you would think me being a woman that I wouldn’t like war tv shows but you would be wrong. I find them realistic intriguing. Truthful and uplifting. Superb show. Priest was good. Germans were accurate. So real.

I was just about at the point of really being upset at this episode, that they would make Saunders go bonkers because of bad news and force a clearly sick guy into a brutal firefight -- and then the truth came out. The way Saunders does it is just so spectacular, how he tells him the story of the letter, how he berates him while motivating him to fight his cowardice, and how he reveals the rest of the story at the end. As I've said elsewhere, Jason was an excellent actor, but Murrow is an entirely different level. He could match the film greats like Cagney, Tracy and Peck, win terms of saying mountains with a mere twitch of an eyelid or quarter of a smile.

Another super episode in a seemingly endless flow. Thankfully, the German ended up showing his true colors. I get sick and tired of all the TV episodes showing all the kind-hearted soldiers who couldn't stand what Hitler was doing. Yes, I am sure there were a few German soldiers here and there who actually had a human heart; there are always some exceptions. But tragically, the German people, let alone the military men, were as close to being universally cleansed of true human feelings as any people in history. That mega-Satan managed to brainwash the entire German nation with his sickening evil beliefs.

The writers must have really loved Saunders. He got all the best 'one-liners' and philosophical rants. I loved his character as well!

Tue @8:30, make a ‘fox hole’ of couch cushions, plastic helmet, Metel tommy gun, dad’s web belt, canteen, rubber band 45 in the leather holster, ‘squirt’ grenade and “hit the dirt!” Around 5, I was crushed to learn ww2 was long over. I met Vic Morrow at Laswordsville Lake by Cincinnati-my hero. 8 usaf, 30 army inspired by show. Nurse-so they would’nt give me a BAR ☹️.

I was a first-grader when I watched this episode on January 7, 1964. I asked my father what a "pillbox" was, and he explained. It's unusual that I can look can and know the exact date I learned a new word. (I also remember learning what an "amphibian" was from the title of a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea episode).

In my comments to E.3 I remarked about how the series had gone from an inconsistent start of some really good and some rather outlandish and non-realistic episodes, to a consistent week in-week out superb series with deeply thoughtful and highly moving episodes acted brilliantly by the 2 stars and strong supporting characters. How appropriate that it was followed up by a sizzling 2-part episode that not many war movies can top in terms of heart-pounding thrills, scorching emotions, and psychological depth. The script was simply incredible, including a flaw-proof escape plan that is absolutely brilliant.

I have watched every episode from the first, since coming across this series. Around 1/3 of the way through, I found many of them to be really powerful, but they were also mixed with numerous unrealistic episodes that included ridiculous comedy scenes, or stories and characters that could never exist in a real WWII unit. But as the season moved on, things started improving, and the last string of season-1 episodes, along with the first 3 of season 2, have all been first rate. Yes, it might be hard to imagine taking place in reality, but it is not so outlandish as to be over the top and impossible. I hope things continue like this, because I have truly been hooked for the past 15 episodes or so, and loving every minute. Jason is really good, but Morrow is sensational -- as good as any weekly TV role I have ever seen.
