That sound stage and back lot really took a beating. The prop section did a great job making the village look like many different villages. Using real French speakers added realism to the shows. Great group of actors and enjoyed the guest stars. I watch them in the 60's. Glad to see them again

Another masterpiece episode. This is an anatomy of a human being--no sugar, just straight black coffee. This show went past and deeper than a "adventure" war show. Drama and pathos at its very best....which is why I watched the show as a boy--I connected to its soul...

I used to watch this show in S Korea as a kid while my father was there working for the US army in Late 60s early 70s. It was on Korean TV and all spoke Korean bc it was dubbed. The incredible thing is that they did such a good job dubbing that every word matched the lips and even the voices; especially that of Saunders and little John was just like their English voices. I found this out in the 80s and 90s when they used to have Combat marathons once a year. Anyways it’s a great show!

Another one that i have never seen before.I never got to see many back in the early 60s as we dident have TV back then. lucky enough to see a few when we would go for a haircut at my uncles (The local barber & also a WWII vet) on Tuesday nights once a month. This is the show that peaked my interest in WWII history & a lifetime of collecting memorabilia including a Thompson just like my hero Sgt.Saunders carried.My collection turned into a War Memorial Museum 25 years ago & still growing.Have been watching a couple episodes per day but all new ones for me & the music & sounds of the 88s & Sgt Saunders Thompson really brought back the memories

@felicitym14
@felicitym14 3 жыл бұрын
@@petercermak4095 Including the purple heart he received before the series even began, Saunders would have had 49 purple hearts. But most action shows had heroes wounded or injured many times. The episodes were more "what if" this happened rather than a sequential time line. After all, the series ran longer than the war itself. The entire series was only about them in France for maybe 6 or 7 months

You can see a microphone hanging down from the ceiling in this scene. They screwed up. Funny. It shows for a split second then you see it go up and disappear. I forgot they used old fashioned microphones. This feature is intense. Are they removing a bomb? They put a clip in it. I was reading about the last episode of combat. It brought back memories of what happened to spider sabich? In the last episode Claudine longet was on trial for killing the great skier. I don’t know what happened when he got shot but it’s always questionable. Who’s to say what really went on. It could have been an accidental shooting. Then again he was known to cheat on his girlfriends. And he could have possibly cheated on longet also. Maybe she couldn’t take his cheating any more and just decided to knock him off. Not realizing the circumstances. God will decide her fate in the end. This is still a great show! And I still love it after all these years and I’m now 72. ❤

My Dad was born in 1910 and was there in The Battle of the Bulge in Germany 2 winters. He was a chauffeur and drove a jeep with a 50 cal. Mounted and one day he was carrying a Captain to another camp and came around a corner and met a German tank head on, but the tank didn’t fire on them, he and the Captain jumped out and hit the ditch and hiked back to camp, he said the tank must have been out of Ammunition due to their bad supply chain.

Yes, one good example is in Season one: One Day in June. Saunders and Hanley get into a disagreement over a girl. Hanley out ranks Saunders though both are sergeants and puts him on guard duty on his night off. Saunders' face during the 'stocking episode' and his reaction to Hanley's nasty use of Saunder's ribbons is priceless!

My nominee for the BEST Combat SCRIPT; complex fascinating and beautifully crafted. Sort of a "Road" picture once Vic and Rip start their journey through the forest. The shot of both of them ascending the hill when they arrive at the camp at dawn is almost liturgical in its effect; it's "Salvation". But the story is far from over. The final exchange-- Rip having rejoined the fight while Saunders is being taken OUT of conflict-- is great. Who knows if Saunders' R&R period will have the same effect on him as did Rip's out-of-action recuperation? Very probing, insightful, understated writing. Just great, especially for a weekly,hour-long action show. LR

If the Germans post-D-Day had made as many effective "counter-attacks" as depicted in COMBAT, then the War in Europe would still be undecided. Can’t count how many times he’s been hit in the feet, legs, arms, hands, shoulders, chest, back, head, lost his eye sight in one episode and his hearing once in another. Miraculously he is never wounded enough to be sent home or out of action for very long. And like some men, never whines about it. What a HE MAN, gotta love him.

Somebody has to round out the squad by not following orders without question. Somebody has to be concerned with their life more than the mission. Kirby isn't a coward he's concerned about all of their lives. Jack Hogan is a great actor but doesn't get much recognition here on KZbin. He's one of the brave actors who doesn't play the hero. He plays Kirby damn well. The heroes aren't just the guys who didn't make it home. Heroes are the guys who were scared shit and went out there anyway. Hogan and Torn play different kinds of soldiers who are more alike than they realize. I think Kirby has a lot more to go home to than Avery or Saunders. and he's not gonna throw it away

To think that the Army could ever hang a poor GI for desertion? Not after surviving Africa, landing in Sicily, and storming the beaches of Normandy? Wow! I just realized that Avery is really a young Rip Torn.

At 17:00 - 17:09 a microphone boom (I think that’s what they’re called) makes a shadow on the upper left hand side of the wall. 😁 I am a huge fan of Combat!! I can’t imagine how embarrassing and hard it must be for a tough man like that to suddenly loose all his courage. Just to crack like that must be so scary. PTSD is so sad to see!

That's why I love watching "Combat". It covers the human element in war. It's way more than a bang-bang shoot em up show. They touched upon delicate issues like this that weren't usually covered.

I loved him in his role as the invisible man, maltese falcon and many others growing up in the 60s and 70s, it was the movie "The Prodigy " that made reference to him, that made me want to use his name . he kinda reminds me of Orson Bean, with great witte and humor.

Standard operating procedure for deserting the first time was to be sent back to the line. As far as I know only one person was shot for desertion and he deserted numerous times.

He deserted once. Replacement for the 28th division after their famous parade march through Paris but before they were chewed up in the costly and Battle of Hürtgen Forest (19 September to 16 December 1944). He was given multiple offers to tear up an incriminating confession of desertion and rejoin the Division. Expecting a discharge and Jail, he, as an ex-con refused these offers.

I've watched the whole series on dvd, was a big fan as a kid in the 60s. I think I saw only one character, though hesitant or frightened, who didn't redeem himself before the end of the story. It was on one of the later color episodes. I figured the writers and actors knew about the realities of war and didn't want to judge. I imagine just about every combat soldier was scared as hell at one time or another.
