Finally a video with some waves but either the kayak is an XL kayak or the guy is really short. My legs would never enter as easy as that

I think a subtle point here is that he lifts the kayak first to dump any water.

You need to be physically fit to use this. Balance and strength. If you're out in these conditions alone you should be brutally honest with a self evaluation of your own fitness. One of the only methods aside from a paddle float that is a single boat recovery. I've always heard this called the cowboy method. Glad to see a real life scenario of it.

It was before I started myself with kayaking that I saw this video, which impressed my massively. Now I publish my own sea kayak adventures on KZbin. Nice to find this one again.

Some advice for this rescue: 1. Rescuer: Stow your paddle under your rigging or across your lap. Don’t drop it in the water where it can easily float away. 2. Rescuer: Wrap the sling around your coaming or hitch it to your perimeter lines. Maybe your boat is too wide to pass the tape under it from a sitting position. 3. Rescuer: Don’t rely on a third-party (who may not be there) to steady you. 4. Rescuer: After emptying, align the swimmer's boat in the opposite direction to your boat; it’s easier to rescue that way around. 5. Rescuer: Drop the stirrup behind the swimmer’s cockpit, not in front; climbing aboard will be easier that way. 6. Swimmer: Put your “stern-side” foot in the stirrup, turn to face your stern, swing your “bow-side” foot directly into your cockpit, keeping your body-weight low. It should all be quicker and more stable that way. 7. Rescuer: Hold onto the swimmer's boat with both hands -- else it can easily flip over again -- on either side.

Now that is a superb video! So many just give the demo' in calm water, great whilst you are learning and getting used to being in the water but this video is the real deal, rough water, waves coming over both you and the kayak and great tips. Thank you for posting.

Really impressive. I also noticed timing the waves and kinda using it to help climb onto the rear of the kayak. I’ll have to remember this when I practice,

They left out the important part that involves three months of stretching and flexibility to get your hips to open wide enough for that (recent mothers being the exception).

I wonder if this older video is why I keep seeing this type of outfitting on British canoes. The guy actually says additional flotation is essential!!! Even though North American first nations who invented the design never needed that flotation. Nor the fur trade designs that succeed them, or in more recent times the decades and decades of Canadian trippers who don't have huge air bladders. Honestly they do more to displace water coming into the boat than offer practically needed flotation. Personally I'll take the extra legroom and a lighter portage thank you. You only see air bladders in whitewater outfitting in Canada and very often not nearly that big either.
