It all starts at 01:12 John masterfully rips thru the changes... there in NO WOMAN guitarist in the world that could replicate that.

In this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpXYnYKwr9KEn5Y interview, John says clearly that rehearsals were much slower and the drummer just kicked in high speed and all he could do on live TV was to play his ass off or drown.

Sae him Joey DeFrancesco and Dennis Chambers in Montreal years ago. Mannnnnn that was top shelf. Johns just different. He’s got blues, soul jazz and rock roll in his veins. Then there’s the classical Indian fusion. So much more. He probably ran it down once with Doc and the band then went in.

I was very fortunate to have seen this group on their first American tour opening up for ELP at Winterland in San Francisco .They were so captivating they scared the living daylights out of you but at the same time displayed such beautiful harmonic lines and majestic time signatures. One of the greatest bands to never be seen the likes again. Incredible Take note of the look of the faces in the audience and they were speechless .An added note i saw them before the mini moog was developed as Jan Hammer was using a ring moduiater at the time , Rick Laird was using a Fender Jazz bass not a Ampeg pleix-glass bass as seen here..And John McLaughlin was using a Black Les Paul not a double neck Gibson guitar..with two Marshall stack amolifers...loud very loud 😮 !!!! JIMI HENDRIX was ethereal and John McLaughlin was cosmic..Jimi Hendrix had just passed away and John McLaughlin was there to fill the void.. !!!!

Incomparable I don't know of too many live video recordings of this group with decent fidelity and pleasing camera work. This is one of them. I'd like a camera on Billy Cobham the entire time, though, since I'd like to see how he does all those impossible chops and fills. What muscular sophistication! "One Word" give him an extended and mind-boggling solo. Sadly, I never saw this group live. I was sixteen when they broke up and they never came to Anchorage, Alaska or were playing in California when I would visit in the summer. Nevertheless, they left us some phenomenal music, a new kind of sound--jazz-rock fusion with explosive solos and tight group cohesion over complex arrangements. Listening to "The Inner Mounting Flame" in about 1972 opened me up to new dimensions of aesthetic and spiritual experience, although I would not find my way home until Jesus Christ found me in 1976. Still, this music is a gift from God. The crowed response is a bit tepid, given the magic they were experiencing.

Cobham could do this song then hop off the kit, on to the field and can orchestrate a textbook outside linebacker blitz to a QB’s weak side all on time, in the pocket of course.

Astonishingly immaculate musicianship! I had the good fortune to see this same set performed by this amazing crew a few months earlier that year at the Whiskey à Go Go in Hollywood. it was a much more intimate venue, and the entire vibe throughout that night was seething with incredible energy. An unforgettable and extremely visceral experience. I looked forward to seeing them again, and I was able to do so the following year when they tore up the stage at the Roxy. 👍👍
