Funnily enough, this modification makes your single-valve bass better suited than just about any modern dual-valve bass for the Bartok B-F glissando! Very cool modification, and while I as someone with short arms greatly prefer an independent dual rotor setup, I have to imagine the low C and B on this instrument are unparalleled in terms of clarity and volume versus when two valves must be engaged especially for the latter.

Thank you for sharing this unique insight. I wasn't previously aware about the different between pivoting versus shifting, so it's clear now. One question I had is that if you use a pivot to hit pedal Bb, wouldn't that be the same embouchure rather than a different embouchure? (Relatedly, NY trombonist Normal Bolter has mentioned that trombonists rarely use the exact same embouchure when we play.)

I am from Delaware USA and my hs band teacher would tell me about the importance of forming an embouchure on the trombone when I was transitioning from trumpet to slide trombone. I did not know what he meant by embouchure. So he narrowed it down and had me getting a trombone mouthpiece to buzz on it so I can get used to playing a lower instrument. My music director did warn me that the trombone is a different animal. I have adapted well and successfully cultivated my sound on the trombone in a short amount of time from my junior to senior year.

Hi. A superbone is a bass trombone. It will not give you a fat bassbone sound. The idea was to play low c and b natural with the least possible resistance i.e. with one valve.

Thank you for the interesting video of your 72H. It sounds very nice. I am curious - when you play the octave B's and C's, what (if anything) are you intending to demonstrate by playing the upper octave on the F valve? If I were playing those notes in succession, I would play the upper octave in 7th and 6th on the unvalved horn.

I've had a fair amount of experience with low brass such as tuba, baritone, euphonium, tenor trombone, and bass trombone my advice is to keep a fixed and stable embrochure and focus mainly on air speed because bass trombone has much faster air speed than tuba

Jordan Shaw if you pick a Denis Wick 2 or 3AL you gonna have bass trombone bigband sound (lighter than symphonic). If you are the 3rd trombone out of 4trombones a 3 or 4AL will do the job. 3-5AL are all around mouthpieces. Do flexi and sluring exercises and in the upper register you must use air and do not push. - From a tuba player that also play trombone.

My tip is to play loud because bass trombone is what bands put the best trombonist on . I play tuba too and I was put on bass trombone for jazz this year and my band director told me to play louder that I'm the bass part and they put there best trombonist on the bass so be loud and be proud cause your low brass

Hi Trystan, thanks for watching my videos! First of all, I wouldn't be too concerned with what other people think about your choice of instruments. If you like your single valve horn and you can negotiate the music you want to play with it, who cares? By the same token, a double trigger horn opens up lots of new possibilities. You can definitely add a valve to your horn, but I would only do that if you're really happy with it and love the way it plays in general. Selling your horn and buying a double trigger is probably a better way to go. There are lots of great horns on the market. I play Conn trombones primarily. The new Conn 62h is a great instrument and reasonably priced. The Yamaha Bass Trombones are really nice and can be found used for around $2000.- Ebay is a good place to look for a used bass trombone. Good luck! Bradley

Thanks for the advice!! I really appreciate it. I play a Holton tr183, and I do love it quite a bit. I'll more than likely end up getting a double trigger horn eventually, but like you said, who cares if I have a single trigger horn right? Thanks for the great advice again. I'll definitely get some use out of my single trigger! Looking forward to any new videos of yours! THANKS!

Hey Bradley, Great videos!! I also play very similar to you, with me shifting the instrument to transition from low to high. Anyway, I have a quick question for you if you don't mind to answer. I'm primarily a Tuba player, however in the past few months I purchased my first bass trombone ( I already own a cheap tenor to play for fun). I plan to play mainly for a jazz big band, however some solo/piano accompaniment stuff interests me as well. Because I'm a Tuba player, and on a limited budget, I decided to purchase a single trigger bass trombone. (double trigger brought it up another 500-1000$) I've read that you can do pretty much everything you'll need to play on a single trigger horn(besides low B natural), so I went with that, and felt pretty good about it. However, many people have criticized my decision saying that I absolutely should have bought a double trigger over a single trigger.....So that FINALLY brings me to my question(sorry). Is it possible to have a second trigger installed onto my single trigger horn??? Would that even be a possibility??? Or would it be just the same amount of money to sell my horn, get my money back and spend a little extra to purchase a double trigger horn? So sorry for the length, but I felt like you were the one to come to....THANKS A LOT!!!

I'm sure you've come to a resolution on the situation by now, but just so there is an answer on this some tech's could install a slot in valve to convert from a single to a dependent double set up. I purchased a horn last summer that had this modification on it. I don't know how much this kind of modification would cost though. Valves might be $200, but then I'm sure there's plenty of labor to add to the cost. If the music you need to play doesn't have valve Bs written at all, that kind of expense might not be worth it.

If the Conn 110H can be Tuned to E, then it could work, but you should read my comments regarding the drawbacks to this setup. You need to have a good tech, and you have to spend some time getting used to it.

Hi Mirko, If I understand correctly, you meant that putting the F trigger on the middle finger is awkward.. That is true, but there was no way to get the amount of travel necessary out of the third finger, so we ended up using the thumb instead. It takes some getting used to, but it can be done. Keith, good questions. It is fast, but of course a valve is quicker. First of all, it isn't really a substitute for a double trigger horn. I wouldn't use it to play solo repertoire, for example, where a lot of quick technique is required. The other thing to remember is that the tuning is still in E, which means that C is in 6th, and B natural is in flat 7th. That is more of a hinderance in terms of speed than the trigger itself. On top of that, there is a lot of compression and suction involved as the trigger moves in and out. You have to learn to activate the trigger slide while the F valve is depressed. This all requires practice. 16th notes can be played, but I would use a double trigger horn if I need ed to play a lot of them. It was a great project, and it works very well, but it is more complicated to play and use (and requires more effort, as well.) Modern open wrap horns with good valves will also give you a fat B natural.☺
@keithsmart3160
@keithsmart3160 8 жыл бұрын
You setup seems fast. I would like to know how quickly can the slide be engaged in an actual playing situation? If you could describe or show a quick 16th note passage that includes the tuning slide that would be great. I imagine that the technique would have to be precise to avoid any variation in tone quality as engagement/disengagement occurs.

With regards to the exercises, I intentionally played them in many Keys, hoping that if I played them enough, people would figure them out and learn them by ear. Now I realise that some find it difficult to do that. I will find a way to get them written out. My next Video will be done in a few days...😊

Hi Keith, adding a trigger would probably be simpler, but would cost a bit more, I think. The main drawback is the fact that you're still in a long 7th position for the B. You also need a really good tech, because it has to work really well and be reliable, otherwise there's no point in doing it. But I like to play my low C in 7th pos. (even with Double trigger horns) because of the open sound, and with this horn I also have a very open B natural. Regards, Bradley

While I see this as a solution for the single trigger bass, is it cost effective as opposed to moving up to the double trigger bass? That 72H sounds fantastic! I can see why you would want to keep it practically the way it is yet facilitating the low B.

I know I'm late, but I looked at the Miraphone contrabass model for a few minutes and it can definitely be done, however it would be pretty heavy and clunky. The material they use for those tuning slides on the big horns are naturally heavier than the material used for the actual slide. It can definitely be done don't get me wrong, but it would take a lot of tinkering to get it smooth, light, and usable in a fast setting
