I am from Delaware USA and my hs band teacher would tell me about the importance of forming an embouchure on the trombone when I was transitioning from trumpet to slide trombone. I did not know what he meant by embouchure. So he narrowed it down and had me getting a trombone mouthpiece to buzz on it so I can get used to playing a lower instrument. My music director did warn me that the trombone is a different animal. I have adapted well and successfully cultivated my sound on the trombone in a short amount of time from my junior to senior year.

Great tuition - thanks Bradley. I love the fact that you point out the individuality of technique (quote: "... it may not be right for you ...")

Thank you for sharing this unique insight. I wasn't previously aware about the different between pivoting versus shifting, so it's clear now. One question I had is that if you use a pivot to hit pedal Bb, wouldn't that be the same embouchure rather than a different embouchure? (Relatedly, NY trombonist Normal Bolter has mentioned that trombonists rarely use the exact same embouchure when we play.)

Thank you for the advice. What is that on the slide?

It's called TIS (short for tuning in slide). it's for reducing the resistance in the bell that a normal tuning slide causes
