SA GP first held at the Prince George Circuit in East London from 1934 to 1966. Circuit was a 24,4 Km road circuit, shortened to 17,7 Km in 1936. The permanent circuit was built in 1959. The first F1 World Championship took place there on 29 December 1962. Kyalami was built in the early 60's and had it's first F1 GP in 1967. The "old circuit" certainly had it's magic, along with "zillions" of spectators. The new circuit lacks a "proper straight" and thus with today's cars, overtaking is "Monaco like". I did not see hordes of spectators at recent 3/9 hour..........

Correct me if im wrong but i have seen 1 or 2 XR8's in a 2 door Config. back in the early 2000s late 90's . 1 Was White like the 1 in the vid. but the other , Im not sure if it was a replica build , because it was repainted in gold. It was a 2 door wit a V8 in it. Granted when i saw it , a mechanic was driving it , and he was known too also have falcon gt v8 and ford galaxy v8 500 with the hideaway headlights , So I wont put it past him to do a conversion , but how many ford Sierras was there in 2 door?

The gtv was a beautiful car, very rare in N. Ireland, but among capris, asconas, mantas etc the gtv turned heads, and even the flat fours, or even the fiat based 2L twin cams, all sounded like illicit sex! But the later 90s V6 Alfa engines in whatever models almost would look better without the bonnets! I've a hankering to build a trike with the split engine/transaxe of the V6 Alfa, as the engine can be displayed with pride, and amusement seeing petrol heads wander away before their erection becomes visible! Probably the best looking engine produced EVER!

My concern with F1 coming to SA besides the fact that it will be stupid expensive for south africans to attend, is the direction the track will take after that. Will companies like Wesbank for festival of motoring or BMW , and other concert makers like dstv still be able to "afford" a grade 1 international track afterwards because these are the events that ordinary south africans can go to and experience the track

I attended that very 1st GP in 1967 at all of 3 years old. My Dad became a volunteer time keeper for Ferrari for both the GP's & the 9 hours, so my early years were spent in the pipits with him at all of those events, until 1977. I was in utero on the 21st of December 1962, when he & my mother arrived at Westmead in Durban, for practice of the final GP of the season, to discover that Gary Hocking had just been killed. I was at Kyalami in 74 when Peter Revson was killed in practice & in 77 when Tom Pryce was killed right in front of me during the race. In those days, all the drivers & crew stayed at the Kyalami Ranch Motel & we would always go there after the race, where the drivers were easily accessible, not like today. Thankfully I have vivid memories of those days & the cars & drivers that I saw, for which I still have an interest 57 years later.

Seriously guy ... the LAST thing South Africa needs is a F1 GP. Firstly, the last time it happened, hundreds of millions of taxpayer money was stolen and wasted because of BS lies about it's benefit to the country. And the person who ended up with most of that money never saw a day in jail ... instead he just moved on to promoting another sport where he could use government connections to line his pockets ... golf, although he did pop back into motorsport to pull the same stunt with World Superbike racing, who also cancelled long before the end of the contract and washed their hands of South Africa. Secondly, NO ONE in F1 wants a F1 GP here, no matter what they say. What they want is HUGE race fees and / or leverage to use to force other circuits to pay even higher fees to retain their races for fear of losing them to South Africa - exactly what happened last year when suddenly FOM people were flying to SA for meetings about an imminent race. (all while in the middle of intense negotiations with Circuit Spa about their renewal. Spa fell for the ruse, paid big money, and suddenly the SA GP was off. Thirdly ... those fees. There is zero chance that the hosting fee will be less than $50million. In fact, I'll guarantee it'll be as near as bang on $60 million, given what the recent contracts have been. So put that into Rands. R1.08 Billion!!!! Just for the hosting fee. For a 4 day event. And 90%+ of that money leaves South Africa for the now US owners of F1 who share some of t with the teams. Then there are circuit modifications at R180 million that need to be recovered from the promoter, over and above the circuit rental. The promoter then needs to setup the circuit for the race with additional portable stands, ablutions, security, parking & access, media facilities, etc. So all in the promoter will need to spend somewhere north of R5.5 billion over a 5 year race contract. And remember that the contract requires the FOM be given a BLANK circuit, because they have already sold all the advertising on it, of which not a cent goes to the local promoter. The only spare space is for an event title sponsor, which they will sometimes bring to the party, but take and even bigger chunk of that than any promoter might. Fourth. Do the maths. Even if they find a way to accommodate 100k people at the circuit, and convince everyone to buy a 3 day pass ... that's 5.5 billion divided by 500k = R11000 per person. Even if they weight the tickets with Gold, Silver, Bronze packages, AND they get an international title sponsor, the Bronze ticket will cost no less than R5000, with a Silver in the region of R8000, and Gold about R12000, and VIP tickets in the R25K bracket. If you think I'm talking BS, just look at the prices of more recently added races, like Miami (who will be on a similar hosting fee). Miami general access tickets are $1000, or R18k. Fifth, and probably the BIGGEST reason we do not WANT a F1 race here, are the Gold and VIP prices mentioned above. South Africa is a small automotive market relative to other places. But, local manufacturers / branches / agencies for international brands, all have local marketing budgets, and most have some sort of motorsport budgets. Often those aren't huge, but they do allow Champion or NGK plugs, Ferodo brakes, Castrol lubricants, Bridgestone tyres etc to support a fairly large number of local competitors by supplying product in turn for some advertising on their vehicles. Now we get an F1 race ... the CEO's decide that money is better spent inviting VIP guests (most of whom have never been to a local race or even know what F1 is) to the F1 weekend at R25k per person. That's the entire motorsport and most of the marketing budget blown, so now local competitors have to buy all their product, which eliminated many of them. Culled for a 4 day F1 race that brings ZERO new race fans to local motorsport. And finally there is the event If you and your mate paid your R10k for two of the cheap seats, you will sit on a metal bench seat in hot sun / afternoon rain, you will stand in queues for toilets and food and drink - where you can expect to probably pay R30+ for a can of Coke and R120 for a boerie roll. You will need to rely on park and rides, probably costing you another R200+. Now, do you really think there are 100K people in South Africa who can and will pay between R6k & R14k per person to watch a race that's on TV live anyway, or costs a few dollars to watch live on F1TV?

@@impulse_guy_22 I was knee deep in it the last time F1 came to Kyalami, involved in Group N racing ... so was excited to have F1 back, having been to every GP / 9Hr / Sportscar / GrandPrix bikes / etc at the old circuit since the mid 70's. Turned out we couldn't even get preferential tickets so had to buy just like Joe Public. Then we got messages from supplier after supplier that they would no longer be able to support Group N privateers with brakes, plugs, fuel and lubricants, safetywear, etc because they would be spending their motorsport budget entertaining VIP's at the GP instead. So eventually on race weekend, we parked and walked miles, before luckily having someone we knew from AMG stop in a VIP shuttle and run us in to our stand. the VIP' in the shuttle with us had never even been to Kyalami before. Didn't know what f1 was. But they were (literally) eating up our Group N racing budget. And then as you say, ridiculous prices for everything, queues for portable toilets (which no one could use by Sunday because they were overflowing down the road we would have to walk on when leaving. Complete mess. Since 93, I've been to a bunch of F1 events around European circuits. Far better way to watch the racing live.
