My Uncle had a 333 which he sent to Germany and they replaced the engine with a DTM style engine, it was a V8 but I cant remember the displacment I think it was a 4.0. AC Schnitzer wheels and suspension and exhaust and tune and a shadowline bodykit. It was such a mad car. Was painted in grey pearl. That car went back to Germany and he get a newer model M3 sadly. Sure that car would be worth a small fortune now. I remember that back then in 1995-6, the car was pushing just shy of 450hp which was like ferrari F40 power back then. He sold it as he didnt feel safe in this country with it as its such a sought after car he rightly felt that he had a target on his back. Prevented him from being able to use it to it full potential and it sat in the garage mostly but it worked out as when he sold it its was pristine and had less that 7500km on it. Cant remember what he sold it for but I know he got a new M3 and a motor 42ft motor yacht afterwards. If you wondering, my uncle was a managing director at one of the biggest insurance firms in the country at the time so he could afford toys and he loved BMW. Was through him that I got the itch to. I remember his home office, he had modle BMWs in lighted cabinets, magazines, memorabilia, I loved it all. And ofcourse the best was walking into that garage. I can still remember the beautiful garage smell and the cars and bikes! Good times.

Just a few corrections, the 333i was not built as an alternative to the M3 because it was actually released before the M3, the M3 was only released in 1986, BMW South Africa has a history of building race-inspired performance versions of BMWs like the 70s E12 530MLE way before the M5 or the M535i of the 80s. The 325iS was intended as the South African alternative to the M3. Also, you use 325i Shadowline and the 325iS interchangeably, they are two VERY different cars. The Shadowline is a standard 325i (2.5l) with a kit like a G20 318i M Spoort is a standard 3 series with an M-Sport kit, but the 325iS (2.7l) is a highly tuned car with M parts. The 333i was front-heavy with terrible oversteer (compared to the 325i), offering very little performance improvement over the standard 325i except in a straight line. The standard 325i had better weight balance, driving dynamics, and handling especially in the bends. The 325iS changed that, you got M3 driving dynamics, handling, and performance and the most awesome exhaust note. Of all South African E30's the 325iS is regarded as the king of the hill because of its performance. The high value of the 333i is more so because of its rarity as opposed to its performance, the 325iS easily bests the 333i on every metric. Many 333i owners at that time had upgraded to the 325iS and many standard 325i owners had better performance than the 333i with some simple mods.

@@philtucker1224 Excluding the E23 (1st gen 3 series) I've owned every other 3 series made and from E36 onwards they were all brand new. While classic cars are great to covet, real-life ownership is a very different thing. Unless you have unlimited funds for the upkeep you are not going to get sheer driving pleasure, If you don't drive them regularly you will also have problems. Frankly speaking, the current G20 330i (2l 4 cylinders) will give you a more engaging drive, with none of the hassle that classic cars can match.
@clintonkietzmann60173 ай бұрын
I read somewhere through the years that BMW South Africa sourced the M1 engines for the BMW 745i for the group 1 homologation and replaced the engines in some BMW 733i with them. They then had all these 3.3L liters engines spare and decided to put them in a 2 door 3 Series body and call it the 333i and sell it as a one off limited edition. That was the real reason for the 333i and the rest about the M3 not coming to South Africa for valid reasons I guess and BMW SA making the 333 in place of it was just slick BMW marketing at the time. The reason was to get rid of the excess 3.3L engines at a profit.
@monk3yboy693 ай бұрын
I very much doubt that story.

@@CygnusPrime yes I’m inclined to agree with you. I’ve had my fair share of new performance saloons over the years (and have a performance R&D related engineering background). Why would they friggin' bother? It'd be for f-all sales. However, that some quirky local car products were concocted by Saffers, might be even less interesting than my own country's car industry.
