WOW! I have listened to many a dark star in my life.....but this one is really special.

I love how Jerry often doesn't even do the second verse of dark star, but here they do a whole other song before getting to it

Hate to say this I really do. But Darkstar rarely does "it" for me. Its like Space with 45 seconds of magical singing. Sure the bassline is swinging but to me it just never really is the thing it seems to be for so many. I know im gonna get my head chopped off for this but give me a weather report suite or help/slip/tower any day over any darkstar

No amount of Sphere visuals can replace the original sound and the time and place. Enough with the technology. Time to get back to authentic tripping.

For me the Beautiful Jam is a deep imprint of that era not just in the Dead world but in American society writ large. There is something about it that just always expresses that feeling. Chills every time.

I wonder since we can, well some of us appreciate really beautiful pieces of music and their uniqueness from 100 plus years ago. Even 200 and 300 years, and that if someone from back then who understood music and or someone like Beethoven or Mozart would appreciate this for what it is? These are very complex pieces of music. I'm sure they be appalled at first because of the electric instruments and loudness, but giving time to study the structure of the pieces what would they think?

First saw the Dead in 1985. My life was never the same since that day. The world would be a much better place if Jerry was still alive, certainly more bearable.

heard this for the first time in '68 at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis Oregon. I was 16 or 17 and high on LSD . I am forever grateful to the the Dead.

My first and last show. 17 yrs old. First LSD experience. Me and my best friend from 3rd grade took some white blotter for our first time someone gave us. We were with my two older brothers and we had a group of 20 + dead head all their friends who were on the bus and had finally returned home to seatown. Was a breezy sunny spring twighlight sunset 🌅 with space needle soaring. friends all sitting up on the wall up front. I grew up playing football on that field , but oh wow was this is different experience. Has lasted with me every day since 30 yrs later. Truly magical and life altering. Thank you 🙏 ❤ GD and Jerry.

While this music is beautiful Lesh was in the throws of depression caused by Jerry’s death at the time. I’ve heard Billy & Bobby talk about past concerts specifically fan favorites & they have almost zero memory of any eras. Everything pre 1985 (when they’d finally had enough of Jerry’s self destructive behavior followed by his coma in ‘86) blends together which makes sense I guess. Neither Billy nor Bobby say 1977 stands out to them in any way despite it being their best year + 1974 only stands out to them bc they were so worn out which is also crazy bc that’s their “other” top year.

None of the late 80s and early 90s stars hold a candle to the golden age of 69-74. More than half of this doesn't even sound like Dark Star. It is space. Good space, but space. It is good and interesting, but there are easily 30 Stars from the golden age that I would reach for ahead of this. The best 80s Star is without question Berkeley 84. That has a pure lyricism that this one only approaches. Lyricism is the core of Dark Star. The further any Star gets from lyricism the less it is a Star. Other One, Playing -- those are different. Lyricism is less critical in those and in other great Dead jams. But the essence of Dark Star is lyricism. As Bob announces at the beginning of one of the best 60s stars (10-12-68) "This number is a foxtrot"

There were moments during this era when the boys would climb back down from wherever the hell they'd been poking around, find themselves on stage. They'd look at each other with an unspoken "anybody remember what we were playing, or have an idea where to go next?" expression. Just noodle for a bit and somebody will catch a thread so we can all jump back on. Magic stuff.

RIP Jerry, Keith, Ron, Brent, thanks for making and leaving us these gems. Peace, goodwill, and great listening right back atcha. Underrated band, continually blowing me away with each new rendition I find. Thanks thanks thanks. God bless 'em.
