....let say, I bet/pick the nut is in the left shell. As the "dealer" open the right shell (being the dealer know this right is empty), to show you show the nut is not there. You open the centre shell to show the nut is not there also. Hence the dealer has no choice but to make sure the nut that he is holding "out of sight" his hand MUST BE IN THE (REMAINING) LEFT SHELL. WALLA, YOU "WON" BECAUSE THE NUT MUST BE IN THE LEFT SHELL. OTHERWISE, THE DEALER/MAGICAN WOULD BE EXPOSED AS A CHEAT RATHER THAN/OR THE EXPERT/MAGICIAN.

The scam is that he gets her to give him 10 dollars for 5 dollars by distracting her with questions and confusing her with multiple exchanges. After he pays, he gives her 5 singles for a $5 bill. Even. Then feigns changing his mind and exchanges the 5 singles for the $5 bill. Still even. Then says give me a $10 bill and hands her back the $5 bill. She has $10 in her hand (the $5 bill and the 5 singles), and having been distracted/confused thinks this is an even exchange (10 dollars for a $10 bill). In fact she gave him 10 dollars for 5 dollars. I think it confuses people because they also get confused by the multiple transactions (which is the point of the scam) and because it is so obvious they imagine there must be more to it.

It's confusing because you never see her reach over the counter and hand him a five dollar bill in exchange for the five ones. That exchange is intentionally edited out to create confusion for the viewer.

This is one of my favorite movies, and RIcky Jay's performance in the card game scene, how he goes from this menacing outsider to a hapless con-artist munching a hotdog out on the street is so enjoyably well done. RIP, Ricky. Besides your magic, you did a great job in this movie.

The reason some people miss the scam in the movie is because they don't exactly show the moment when the cashier handed him back $5 for the five $1 bills (the scene cuts to the daughter looking back). So it appears as if she's still holding the 5 $1 bills and about to grab a $5 in return but he adds on the $5 she had actually already given him instead of adding another $5 bill.

The ball under the cup trick is a better distraction I think, this was way too easy to guess each time, but for either of those tricks, you've got to have pretty bad eye coordination to start with, to not be able to guess it every time, especially with only 3 items that one guy who got hustled must be blind as a bat or something...

The dude playing is in on it. Anyone with a reasonable quick eye could see he put the white one in the middle.He made it easy on purpose to suck you in making you think you can win. When you start betting he will play his tricks on you so you ll never guess the right one.
