Thank you so much Melissa & Ron. I love sweet peas, my Pop used to grow mountains of them. I haven't grown them for a few years but am going to again this year & am going to follow every one of these tips especially as I'm in High Wycombe so conditions will be exactly the same.

My family is Calabrese. We are from Badolato. This is the first year in my almost 40 years we didn't have zippolis. I'm the only one who ever learned and this year it was just too much. But, I love this video and I love that I understood everything she said. Our dialect is very specific and the random English words really hit home

No offence but that is not how Calabrese make chickpeas and pasta. To begin with we use actual chickpeas - soaked overnight. Cook them slowly for quite a while next day. If they are not cooked correctly they are tough. However when we do them they melt in your mouth. Even if using the tinned chickpeas they need to be thoroughly rinsed first before adding to the pan. The base for the sauce requires FINELY chopped onion COOKED gently till translucent then a little passata or chopped tinned tomatoes added with some water and slowly cooked down. Then the cooked chickpeas are added and simmered gently. If potato or finely chopped carrot is added there is no need to mash it up. It should not resemble baby food. There is no point in you cooking the chickpeas from a can because they are already cooked. I have seen this dish made over generations of calabrese women and when my late mother made it looked like something on the cover of a food magazine. Certainly not with canned Ceci if it is meant to be traditional Calabrese.

Absolutely wonderful video. Thank you. As a keen gardener who emigrated from the UK 14 years ago, this is fantastic information. Learning and adapting to Aussie conditions every year. Beats a cold greenhouse in England and sowing my sweet pea seeds in toilet roll tubes 😂 More videos with the priceless knowledge from Ron would be amazing.

Love seeing the 'knowledge' being passed on and shared. Thanks Ron, I'm going to run out in the morning and nip mine out and feed them up, only mistake was planting at the back of a bed with hydrangeas and they're acid lovers I think, so next year I'll plant differently. Many thanks and hope to catch you both at one of the shows later in the year.
