It's funny that you mentioned the rock golem with Sho Fu Kan as the weakest fight scene; that's the main reason I loved the show, because of the story. The way he won and the way the other characters reacted lead up to one of the best plot twists in anime (or anime-adjacent) storytelling. (As was discussed in the spoiler section.) I loved the way season one slowly revealed secrets about the whole cast.

Because you’ve mentioned Detective Conan’s Ski Lodge case. Fun fact: That manga chapter was released only two days after the game came out. Both of them came out in November 1994. So technically no rip off happened, but it’s still interesting that they came out so close after each other.

Great overview of the srw series. Ihave been playing srw since supernes, and was able to play different titles on different (hand held) consoles. The only draw back for me is that i have too little time to play, since every game has great replay value. Cant wait what the future beholds for this series.

I'd seen this video in my recommendations but waited to watch until I got all the endings in the Super Famicom version. It lacks the Detective Mari route and flowchart (added in PS1 remake), plus the Mari in Limbo route. You can only start from a chapter in SFC once you reach an ending. No flowchart was only a big annoyance when viewing all of the labyrinth's endings, since you have to start from the beginning of the labyrinth each time. I somewhat prefer the silhouettes to the anime-style character designs. There are a few situations where the silhouettes are animated, like the cat running out of the closet. Per Mari being nude when being possessed in the occult route, the silhouettes on SFC mean the game uses, so to speak, wider "action shots" that are like the rest of the game. You can even see the hair extending from her head all the way to the people she tries to harm/kill. About the cryptography route in SFC. The Japanese "find the treasure in the lodge" note contains a subliminal message where the second characters on each line spell out where the treasure is. Getting the author's secret message is also hidden behind subliminal messages. Two screens use the third characters on each line to spell out "Help me!" and "Press Reset here." So on that second screen, you must hit the reset button (!) on your SNES/SFC to access the message. The Labyrinth route is a semi-parody of Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon, which was Chunsoft's most recent release prior to Kamaitachi SFC. It was the first Mystery Dungeon game, as in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, but starring Torneko from Dragon Quest IV.

29:40 Frederica's plan would devastate Hyzante, in her ending she kills virtually all leaders of Hyzante, and their entire religion is effectively destroyed. They have not the tools or ambition to actually find the Roselle and subjugate them. Even if they did. Aestfrost initiates a war on Hyzante so they need to focus their efforts on winning the war. The only way I see Frederica's plan causing death is if somehow: Hyzante regains new leadership and rekindles the people's faith, slaughters Aestfrost, then proceeds to amass the resources required to find, and invade Centralia. (They do not know where it is, the ocean is uncharted and unexplored.) Also, they don't bring anyone but the Roselle with them. Benedicts pleads have been rejected and he's been bested in a duel, he is then given one final request to lead the people of Wolffort to safety. In this route he stays behind and becomes Gustadolph's puppet in exchange for help in reclaiming the land of House Wolffort from whatever remains of Hyzante, and protection for the people of Wolffort. It highlights Frederica's morality quite well. She was always a dreamer who wants to cause as minimal harm. Ergo when the entire continent will fall into war. She wants the arguably most moral thing possible: To free her people, eradicate Hyzante, and then leave far away. Let the people who wage wars destroy themselves and get to somewhere safe. It's not really sloppy. Just that her compassion drives her to the point where she takes her people and abandons everyone else.

Has anyone else noticed how fathers are a recurring theme in the story? Every character has a dead mother (6/8 have a father figure or is a father), And every story involves a father in some way shape or form. And the fact I realized this on Father’s Day is also a funny coincidence.

Its just as you said, this game is an improvement from the first game in everyday possible, but unfortunately "improvement" is the key word to its biggest shortcoming. Bevause that's all it really boil down to: an improvement. Not perfection, not the best, not godlike, just an improvement. Deep down despite how much we love the game as it turned out , there we're SO many things it could have improved on, story-wise most of all. So should there be a 3, I hope they give us a bit more interaction with the next 8 travelers. Not with just travel or banter or joint quests. We need more screentime with all 8 coming together, from enjoying each other's company to facing down a world ending threat. Definetly more than a half hour for sure. Other than all that, this game holds a special place in my heart.

I saw this video half a year ago and I always knew I'd come back to it. I'm learning Japanese myself right now and I'm taking MattFromJapan's full immersion approach- the one he outlines on Refold. Ultimately though, my goal is to get good enough to play Japanese Games/Read Manga and LNs- not get good at speaking Japanese, which is mainly what Matt is all about. I figure that's a goal I can tackle if visiting Japan ever seems realistic. I think I'm about ready to start dipping my toes in visual novel land again. It is, after all, what sparked my love for Japanese media along with anime. I like Alicesoft games as well, I've played Rance 1 and 2 and enjoyed them both (though the remake of 1 was way better than 2), but I don't want to dive deeper into the series until I'm a bit more confident in my Japanese. Any other suggestions on Alicesoft games I could try? Other than Gaouzu Island I mean, you didn't exactly give a glowing recommendation 😅

I remember reading about how Gulcasa's "party" in Yggdra Union kind of a shell of his former life. Elena being raised as a Siskier-like for Gulcasa's companionship, Eudy taking over Jenon's tactics, Baldus being Baldus, etc. It's been so long I forget where I last read it but it felt like a really satisfying explanation.

"Riviera is a pretty happy-go-lucky JRPG." Riviera is set during apocalypse where your former comrade tries to murder you while you and your anime waifus attempt to stop an extinction event. So yeah, pretty light by JRPG standards, I guess.

I kinda started collecting them a bit seriously awhile back. An extremely broken RPG that I became obsessed with is Maka Maka. Broken to the point where you can walk through walls, get OP weapons earlier and theres a bunch of ways to lock you out of the story. But that art is crazy aesthetic.

While I love someone making content about OCTOPATH Traveler, I find myself disagreeing on a lot, so it's time to do some bitchin'. Disclaimer: I'm still in the middle of my 2nd playthrough of the game, and I believe that is required to formulate a nuanced opinion of the stories, so I might come back on these later. First of all, or I guess 8th, I understand putting Throné last, I don't agree, but I think it is justifyable. Agnea being 7th is pretty right imo, no objections, her link to the main story is practically non-existent. Temenos at 6th place is where I'm starting to disagree a lot. Of course Crick is amazing, but I also think the inherent story here is great. Bringing Vados back after chapter 1 was really cool, Kaldena is a very interesting villain, Temenos himself is such a refreshing character, and his theme works really well when you view it as displaying Temenos' mischievousness instead of the detective story. The only weak link is Cubaryi imo, she isn't fleshed out at all. Also the idea of these grand institutions having some deep secrets is a subject touching our reality. Castti at 5, really? Malaya is also a really good side character and the mystery of this one is revealed in a very stylistic way. Having an amnesiac plot done well is also very nice. Trousseau's motivations are kind of unexplained in the story, but he is a good villain and the voice actor is really cool. Her theme also is unique in a special way, I can't explain this, but the vibe cannot be reproduced by covers of the theme. Also Edmund is a pretty good side character. And Castti's own character is absolutely fantastic. She also has the single best non-bossfight chapter in the game imo. Hikari at 4 is fine, no comment. Ochette at 3, now here I have some things to say, because I have her at 8th. First of all: catgirls in OCTOPATH, what a stupid idea. Second, the racism plotline completely sours the first and last chapters of this story. The first chapter is also an absolute slog on replay, even more than the other first chapters. Petrichor NEVER appears in the story, except for in a flashback in the combined story which is an absolute waste. The partner mechanic was cool, though. Also Pom and Heig are not all that good in terms of side characters, Alpione is alright. Also I don't think Ochette's personality is all that great, her love of meat comes over as downright hedonistic at times, although I'll admit the final scene with the Darkling was nice. Overall, I felt like every other story had a more interesting plot or protagonist. Osvald at 2, no objections. Partitio at 1, I know everyone loves Partitio, and I do as well, but I disagree. His first chapter has some really good moments but damn if it isn't tedious! Chapter 2 is slightly forgettable, Garnet feels like a filler bossfight. Chapter 3 is amazing the entire way round though. And then chapter 4 also isn't that fantastic. Its predictable, but the fight is cool. Partitio's theme is good, but it isn't as good as the character themes that actually have more emotional weight. Also, I don't like certain performances of Partitio's voice actor, he grew on me as well, but some lines that should be brimming with excitement sound bland. Ori is great, as well as the newspaper stuff though. The problem is his story is completely feel-good, which isn't inherently bad, but it gets overshadowed by stories with more emotional depth. Also, Partitio defeating capitalism by being good-natured, I don't know, it somewhat reduces complicated issues imo, although an argument is to be made that Hikari's and Temenos' stories also do so at least a little bit, Ochette's story is a bad offender in this regard as well. Some small things about the video, at some points this video felt slightly rushed. Calling Agnea's home town Leaflet, or calling the Moonshade Order the 'Order of the Moon', that feels slightly lazy although they probably were honest mistakes, and this might be nitpicking. Still, opinions will be opinions, and my rankings aren't more right than yours. Also, making content about OCTOPATH is something we needed more anyway, so still, thank you!

14:00 There is *ONE* hint as to the location of Ancardia beyond just the absurdly high turn limit of Scene 23: if you **FAIL** to get to the bonus Scene (meaning that you are locked to the bad ending), Maria/Melia will later pass by this area in a cutscene and comment on how she senses that Ancardia is close, and *nothing comes out of it* because they can only find Ancardia if you open the way to the treasure room and leave the staff in the open for them to stumble upon. Yes, the hint is post--humous to the clearing of the stage, a point in which it comes too late. It's genuinely baffling how obscure and unintuitive this is. This is *fine* though. It's BS but I can deal with it. The one thing I don't like about the whole Ancardia subplot is that if you do this for the Melia route, it *locks you into the bad ending anyway* because "Melia is evil" and will break it instead of using it to fix the world like Maria does in her route.
