Department heaven is legendary in my book. I love their innovations are really enjoyable and soundtracks are heavenly. I hope they're still active.

About 3 years ago, I compiled a list of a bunch of JRPGs and other interesting Japanese developed games I had not been able to play previously that I wanted to buy and experience and the list came out to around 125-150 games. The Dept. Heaven games were some of the first I decided to add and thus one of the first ones I played. Very interesting titles with lots of fun ideas some of which are hard to find in other games. Personal favorite has to be Knights in the Nightmare. With the shift in focus of Atlus USA(now Atlus West) around the time after they published Utawarerumono, Caligula Effect and Alliance Alive in 2017-2018, it has been a shame they no longer localize and publish third party titles. With remasters of the Dept. Heaven series on Switch and also the original version of Baroque on Switch which Atlus USA published the remake version, their exit in this space is felt.

I'm pretty split between Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare for my favorite one, both are fantastic though.

Baroque is sick! I love Sting games. They are so unique and insanely great.

Knights in the Nightmare is on switch now! jp only tho, but hey they're still active! Nightmare is also on mobile, again JP only, but if you know the menus it's the same exact game as PSP, but controls much better. Also it's free!!!

Dept Heaven, were the difficulty lies in the complexity of the gameplay rather than the game itself.

For sure. I think the game that represents that idea the most is actually Gungnir, because holy hell was that game tough to figure out all the way till the end.

I'm looking forward to your reviews on Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare especially. I had the former on GBA and got pretty far, but unfortunately my copy got stolen (ugh). I planned to get the PSP port, but never got around to picking it up. Meanwhile, I pre-ordered Knights in the Nightmare on the DS, but I got really throw off by the whacky controls and never got very far before I put it down. I planned to get back to it, but it got pushed to the wayside by other games and I never did either. (I do still have it as well as the art book that it came with though at least.) Your videos might help kick me into gear to go back and finally beat these games!

Dept Heaven is an rpg series that is designed by people who plays alot of arcade. It got super meter, score system, difficulty that turns harder if your prioritize getting items, Gradius syndrome(you screw up on a certain stage, your will get underpowered for entire playthrough) and so on. I do wish to play Blaze Union and Gloria Union someday.

I desperately wanna jump into the Sting Entertainment games... but the UI design of their games are so abhorrent and overwhelming that I just get anxious trying to comprehend what I'm looking at.

yggdra union is one of my childhood favorite title, I cleared it 14 times idk why but i did, and I've never done that to any other games, not even close, i believe my second most replayed game is fire emblem the sacred stone about 6,7 times; but tbh yggdra is...how to put it... a pretty funky game, and what i mean by that is ppl who love it really loves it, ppl who don't like have a really hard time finding the fun, I'm super interested to find out how will you like or dislike the game.

What's funny about Riviera is that I had to constantly remind myself how to spell it every time I typed it out, because I think I spelled it out off the top my head about 4 different ways.

This was a great series. I still dont know why they don't re-release it digitally.

They actually did release Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare on the Nintendo Switch. Too bad it was Japanese-Only so... meh.

Well... Holy hell, I actually played almost all of these games. Including Blaze Union by using a script fantranslation! Yggdra Unison and Gloria Union being the only ones I have yet to play. As the former lacks a translation entirely, and the latter has a script video fantranslation... But its done by a non-english speaker. And as a result, it ends up reading rather awkwardly. Out of all these games, the only one that leaved me with an extremely sour taste was Gungnir. But I will better leave the explanation when you tackle it.
@Zyraizo2 жыл бұрын
Hah Gungnir. There are parts of the game that I consider to be kinda amazing, but having played my entire playthrough on the advance difficulty, yeah there is alot to say about it. I'm in the middle of playing Blaze Union myself, but probably won't cover it for this retrospective.

@@Zyraizo Honestly, I wouldnt mind the difficulty... SPOILER ALERT If the story HAD A PROPER PAYOFF!!! As well as, not using an ending that absolutely screams "We are putting our bets on a sequel that will NEVER HAPPEN!!!"
