I worked as a handyman for a nasty woman. Example: Her cat's name was (clue) Shadow. She had had Shadow's claws removed (anyone that declaws a cat should not have that cat and their fingers and toes should be half removed as punishment). The old bat was a hoarder so there were lots of mice around. She stopped feeding Shadow so he would get the mice to eat and complained that it was starving itself and getting skinny because he was too stupid to catch the mice for food. I secretly fed Shadow when I could but wasn't there too often. Originally Shadow would hide whenever I, or anyone, was around and I actually thought she might be lying (or imagining) about having a cat. At some point I had to move a dresser which was Shadow's hiding place. I guess Shadow was starved for pleasant and considerate attention because within a few minutes of being nice to it he wanted to be nearby continually. Every time I was there after that he would always be just a few feet away even with very little attention from me since I was on the job, while always staying well away from the old hag. I think I actually had a hand in killing Shadow because I was eventually rarely there for work but I think because of me it realized how terrible it was having to live with the old biddy and I heard that he just faded away and eventually died. I blame her.

NO one ought to have a cat, unless they can at least provide a backyard with a tree and some roaming space. Cats are hunters, and even to chase some insects or flies in a garden is paramount to their wellbeing. Cats do not belong in innercity little appartments!! All this cuddling up, spending big $$$ is done by people that are more often than not capable of forming real human relationships....poor cats. But yes, for some elderly people a cat can be a great companion....no problem with that.
