This is great for new pieces, but how do I memorize pieces that I have mistakenly always played from the score and play well in that way. Obviously they are already in my memory, otherwise it would not be possible to play them at all fluently. Do I just have to go through the pain of forcing myself to drag them out of my memory without the aid of the prompts provided by the score? Or do they have to be abandoned?

Drives you crazy wishing you could be as good as the greats…I practice a lot and still I am not where i want to be when I see the top bassists always busting out impressive fast slaps and such meanwhile I make mistakes and some people point them out sometimes and I beat myself up about them then question myself if I should even keep going….I struggle finding a lot of time to practice cause 2 hrs a day clearly isn’t enough. Then you open KZbin and see awesome people playing bass like a god and your making it no where then I beat myself up again drives me mad sometimes

For me, (thanks to Mark) recording my playing has become a way to enjoy performing without having to be the critic at the same time. When I listen to the recording, I do so at my next practice session, and that's when I become the critic. I listen to a section, note what seems good and also what changes to make, practice that section, then listen to the next section, make changes, etc. Then I'm ready to record the piece again. That way, listening to the recording has become a new and important part of my practice routine.

I resonate with your last remarks about motivation so much - how it is so important for yourself to design your practice such that you see and feel the progress at each level, even if it means focusing on smaller goals. Big aspect of learning any skill in life really. Also love your emphasis on actively reflecting on the process, and asking what matters to you (not being overly concerned with fine precise details of technique, etc.)

I think you meant "have an objective goal", but either way, this is great advice. I remember taking piano in college and the instructor would call out a restriction such as "now only use guide tones and their enclosures". He would force me to think and concentrate. And it forced me to learn new stuff while practicing. (Versus just going over the same stuff I had learned years before.) Unfortunately, I think I stopped practicing that way after graduating his class. lol Thanks!

All the four key elements are important and the one after those is very important for me which is working on something enjoyable. When you love a piece and want it to become your own then you get motivated. So love music as a whole helps finding new works with great inspirations for one to start a new project which keeps those four elements relevant forever

I third that. Not sure how I missed this when Mark originally published it, but as soon as he said it, it made total sense straight away. Making ease of playing the goal feels so much more wholesome and less stressful, and will undoubtedly lead to greater enjoyment and fluidity. If you have enjoyment and fluidity, you stop getting in your own way and naturally produce better sound (esp. on instruments like violin where physical tension is instantly reflected in the tone).
