I used to own an Onkyo TA-630D cassette deck that had Bias adjust with a two tone frequency oscillator. It wasn't complicated and results were very good. It also had "built-in" FM Dolby circuitry. A rather fine deck. Sadly, FM Dolby never caught on.

I have a simple Technics double-cassette deck that allows manual bias adjustment, I also have a Kenwood deck that has auto-calibrate feature - it records a bunch of test sounds, rewinds, plays them back and sets it up automatically. Quite nice.

What about using HDMI? Like using a Canon HV20 camera which has HDMI out.
@ConsumerDV
@ConsumerDV 4 күн бұрын
Indeed, I overlooked this method because DV only camcorders do not have HDMI out. The HV20 is an HDV camcorder that also can record and play DV. With HDMI, the video is converted into uncompressed format, which is lossless, then you either can keep it uncompressed, or re-compress to another format. Since the original video is compressed, the HDMI route is no better than capturing DV over Firewire or USB, but it is no worse either except for huge file size. It is a viable choice if you cannot capture DV as is. Thanks for pointing out to this option, I forgot about it.

Unlike VHS/8-mm video that burns date/time into the video, DV has a separate timecode track. Most NLEs have tools to display timecode info. I use Sony Vegas, so I would create a separate track on the timeline and add FXTimecode effect as a Text overlay.

I wish there was a way to record via the Firewire method. The problem with the USB method is that the video is compressed (Sony, Canon, Panasonic all compress it via their usb interfaces, so you lose quality!).
@ConsumerDV
@ConsumerDV 5 күн бұрын
Firewire is the standard method. USB 2.0 + UVC offers the same quality as via Firewire on camcorders that support it. Some camcorders that support webcam mode can recompress DV video into lower resolution and bitrate, but it is not what this video is about.

When you said you make a DVD with these interlaced videos, you kept them lower field first or progressive?
@ConsumerDV
@ConsumerDV 9 күн бұрын
If you capture analog video using most of the A/D converters, you will get TFF interlaced video. DVD video is also TFF, so it matches, and yes, I keep it interlaced. DV is BFF, so you need to change field order for DVD, but as I edit my videos anyway, my NLE does this for me during render. DVD does not support 50p or 60p, so you need to keep the video interlaced to preserve the motion. Depending on your source video and on your NLE and authoring tools, you may render as 25p/30p or even 24p for film-like sources. I don't know how well native 25p/30p is supported for DVD. My 24p MPEG-2 files with 2:3 pulldown flags are not re-encoded by Sony DVD Architect, but it re-encodes my 30p files into 30i.
@卡拉永遠OK唱不完
@卡拉永遠OK唱不完 9 күн бұрын
@@ConsumerDV I see, well same here I keep them interlaced from my converted LDs collection to DVDs but using a Pinnacle Liquid Edition Pro 6 which converted to 720x480i DV format before rendered to MPEG 2 using Vegas Pro. I chose bottom field first since LD, DV and DVD are BFF mode and also to retain the two fields so my TV or other devices can properly deinterlaced it to 60fps. I did burned them using DVD Architect too. FYI, I did try progressive mode in Vegas Pro properties when I started digitizing but it threw away one of the fields which made the videos terrible when watching on a flatscreen. BTW, is it true that interlaced DVD contained progressive scan too?
@ConsumerDV
@ConsumerDV 9 күн бұрын
DVDs can do progscan up to 30p. I suggest reading this: hometheaterhifi.com/technical/technical-reviews/dvd-benchmark-part-5-progressive-scan-dvd/ Since you are converting from LD, the easiest way is to keep it interlaced and to rely on DVDs ability to recognize pulldown patterns. For KZbin you may want to search for a suitable pattern yourself and to deinterlace to 24p, 30p or 60p whichever fits.
@卡拉永遠OK唱不完
@卡拉永遠OK唱不完 8 күн бұрын
@@ConsumerDV thanks and will do. I do upload some karaoke videos in 60fps transferred from LDs but its a more complicated way. I digitised them first using a Pinnacle Liquid Edition Pro 6 to a DV file then rendered to MPEG2 using Vegas Pro and finally to DVD using DVD Architect Pro (all interlaced source with 0.0901 lines). When it comes to deinterlacing I simply use Handbrake to rip from the DVDs.
@ConsumerDV
@ConsumerDV 8 күн бұрын
Lately I capture analog to DV as well, edit in Vegas, render back to DV, which is non-destructive and very fast if I only do straight cuts, then I either author the resulting video to DVD or deinterlace and upscale for KZbin. Despite common wisdom I prefer my DV captures to uncompressed ones.

The IRC uses composite input? Sure, why not. I don't use it, just looked it up. It seems there are different variants of those IRC cameras, some discard one field, halving both temporal and spatial resolution. But there also seem to be ones that can do 60p, these are better. There no need to search for this particular camcorder just to simulate Super8 :) I'd say any CCD-based camcorder will do. If it can do progscan, it is better, if not, you'll just drop one field and blur vertically a little. Most CMOS-based cameras use rolling shutter, so when you pan, everything distorts, skews and leans to a side, very much not like film. CCD has global shutter, so even if you shake the camera, it looks similar to how a picture from film camera would look. Everything else besides motion artifacts - color, frame rate, grain - can be simulated in post.
